No sticker on hood or rad support to tell you timing? #1 cylinder is one closest to front of engine. By front I mean where all the pulleys, belts etc are.

How do i set the timing on a ford telstar 1985 model with timing light

First find the timing indicator groove in harmonic balancer wheel on the front of the engine near bottom of where serpentine belt runs. You should also see a small metal projection or pointer with a beveled point on it.
Those two things line up at two times, one being top-dead-center of number one cylinder.
Get a piece of white chalk and fill in the groove to make it show up better in the light.
Identify which cylinder is the "Number 1". You may have to consult an engine manual.
Acquire an electronic timing light. (My neighbor has one of mine right now so maybe you have a friendly neighbor like me nearby you can borrow one from.)
Connect up the light to power terminals on battery of car and clamp the sensor to the number one cylinder spark plug wire and make sure all is clear from moving parts.
With car running use the timing light to illuminate the timing mark on the harmonic balancer. It may be off by a small amount showing it advanced by up to 10 degrees which is normal. Check owners manual for correct setting at idle speed with all things connected normally.

If not on right setting, then you have to adjust it by actually turning the distributor assembly by slightly loosening bolt of clamp at is base. Just enough so you can move it but tight enough so it stays in place. Then use the timing light to see if you moved it the correct way and if enough.

with a 4 cylinder engine if you have no 1 piston timed correctly then all the rest will be timed automatically
there is no individual timing for each cylinder

I took out the cylinder head for reconditioning after the car overheated ,then resetting valve timing is my problem now?

Is number 1 on tdcc or tdci? It should be tdcc with both number one cylinder valves closed as they would be on number one tdcc. I have no idea why you would be rocking number 5 cylinder valves with number one on tdcc or otherwise. The valve and ignition timing needs to be set correct on number one tdcc and then all others will fall into their correct timing also.

How do you reset flywheel timing

I am assuming you removed the distributor? If so identify #1 cylinder in the firing order. It must be at top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke. The timing marks should be lined up dead on at center. Then, you install the distributor with the rotor pointing directly at #1 cylinder. It is possible to be a gear notch off in either direction. If it is dead on then the engine will start. From there you will need to set the ignition timing with a timing light to correct advance by rotation of the distributor. May be 6 - 8 degrees BTDC? Consult manual for correct advance degrees.

Remove spark plug cylinder #1 place cylinder end of compression time. Crankshaft pulley timing mark at 0 degree
remove distributor cap then find on the cap where is the number 1 cylinder
while placing distributor in place place rotor to face cylinder 1 wire
replace cap and wires
start engine and move dist. to the best rpm then with timing light adjust timing

Have a problem, motor not turns round, explosions in the caburator, motor is loosing energy

The problem is within the timing. Pull all spark plugs, disconnect ignition coil and clear the cylinders to be certain the cylinders are not flooded. Install all plugs, connect the coil and get the timing light and a test buddy. If you have a carburetor then you have points. Clean the points in the distributor and set them back to specification at TDC cylinder one. Look at the orientation of the rotor and where it points. Look at the cap, is it pointing to plug wire #1? It should be. If not rotate the distributor until it is set to TDC cylinder 1. Another thing to test would be a knock sensor or ignition module. Use the timing light to set the distributor angle. Go with the specifications first. If you don't like the acceleration add 2 degrees more BTDC.

Hi - I would like to reset the timing on a 1993 Mazda 626 2L 4 cyl engine. Could you please help me.

timing an engine is a time consuming process to begin timing an engine you must 1. find the 1 cylinder 2. remove the timing belt cover 3. remove the spark plug form the 1 cylinder 4. put a screwdriver into the spark plug hole 5.rotate the timing belt until the cylinder is at the top of the chamber (thats what the screwdriver is for) 6. mark the top of the timing wheel with a pastel marker 7. with a timing light set the idle speed to the factory settings if you dont have a timing light you can normally get it fairly close by listening

Need help setting the timing

The main timing mark on the pulley usually runs all the way across it. Connect timing light to #1 plug wire...You don"t need to know when on compression stroke! If you need to know for another reason, remove the valve cover and watch rockers on #1 cylinder. Compression stroke happens right after #1 intake valve closes. (both rockers "at rest" at top of stroke.)

unplug the relay it should have a black and a tan set of wires, it could be on the fire wall or by te distributor, mark your timing marks on the vibration damperand the timing cover your correct timing setting should be on a sticker under the hood. hook up your timing lite to # 1 cylinder and adjust away. if you need more info let me know.
