Question about 1995 Land Rover Discovery

ABS LIGHT ON, SHIFT LOCKED, NO BRAKE LIGHT.

I have a 95 Land Rover Discovery. For the past few weeks, ABS light went on, it seems brake is less effactive on braking power on the normal stop. I can step all the way, the car will stop slowly. Hand brake still works well. Also, I have a hard time to shift gear out of parking position. It seems to be locked. If I step brake few times quickly, sometimes the gear will shift out of parking. More over, I just discovered the rear brake lights are not working. Are all of these problems related to the same Anti Lock Brake System? Dose someone know what the real problems are for this car? I now understand why Land Rover named this car as "DISCOVERY"!!!

If your brake lights don't work Its because you blew the fuse  which Is located In the main fuse panel under steering wheel.  Without break lights your rover will fire up nice but wont shift out of park until you replace the fuse.  If your ABS Is acting up It Is also an easy fix.  Disconnect the ABS from each wheel.  You still got all wheel disc breaks that work great but no ABS.  Your other option is  thousands of $$.  If your breaks are weak check your master cylinder and make sure you got enough fluid and that you are not loosing the fluid.  If you notice you are leaking brake fluid because you have to keep filling it up but cannot find a leak anywhere.  I bet I know where It is.  Check your rear break lines and make sure one of them didn't get caught in your rear springs and pinched ever so slightly when you were doing dounuts In the snow.
Good luck,

The brake lites not working could be the whole problem. could need bulbs or brake switch itself.

SOURCE: fuse box location in a 99 land rover discovery

There are two fuse boxes. One in the engine compartment and one under the dash on passenger side.

You can find all parts for your Discovery here.

Location of brake light switch fault on 2002 discovery freelander

The brake light switch is on top of brake pedal arm. Check your bulbs, and connections to the rear lights (unplug harnesses and clean the connectors as well as bulb(s) etc... )

Also, it (shouldn't) be the brake light switch if you can shift out of park. Good luck.

You can energise the interlock solenoid, by you give a positive (+12V) lead to the RED and a negative (ground) to the black line at the transmission selector's connector.
If it works you should check the positive signal at the red.
It should be there if the ignition is on, brake pedal depressed, and the transfer box is in some gear, and the fuse 1 isn't blown.
At the black cable should be a ground signal if the selector in 'P' position.
If you give me an e-mail address I'll send the wiring.

The ABS problem, you have better to check followings.
- All the wheels bearings' play.
- are the ABS sensors at the deepst position? Knock some to that head (not strong) and they shouldn't move deeper.

My Land Rover Discovery Will non come out of Park What could be some of the causes.

First check that the brake lamps work, if they do not , check the fuses , the switch and wires to it at the brake pedal. The transmission shift lock is controlled by a brake switch. Hope that helps

Abs light on brake pads are new disk also replaced stil light shows on

Your ABS has nothing to do with the brake pads. It is a computer controlled actuator that makes the brakes pulse intermittently when you lock them up. If your abs light is on, it means the system is off, down, broke, Get it fixed or put a piece of tape over the light, that is what everybody else does. The cost is high.

Stuck in park, Land Rover Discovery

Had the same problem with my 03 Disco. Went through the usual, checking the fuses, etc. I went ahead and replaced my break light switch on the brake pedal. $15.00 fix, or I thought so; still had the problem! Took it in for repairs and found out it was fuses after all... To get the parking lock to disengage you need to pull of the housing, which is tough and then press in the locking pin at the base of the shift lever to shift out of park. you can do it with the engine running and it will drive just fine until you put it into park again. Check your brake lights if there is a problem. Could be a sign of the brake switch failure. In my case the lights were out, but a cheap trailer rental did the damage. The short in the trailer blew some fuses and it was a problem that cost me $60.00 at the repair shop....

I have a 95 mercedes benz 600s and the asr light keeps coming on and it won't shut off even when i hit the button. any suggestions on how i can disconnect it for good.

Your ASR light is on for a reason, if it won't shut off with the switch it has been tripped by another system. Have your brake switch checked its on the back of the brake pedal. Next have ABS wheel checked. ASR was replaced by ESP and neither system can be shut off completely. If the ASR light is on there is an error it IS OFF.Hope this helps
