Question about 1999 Nissan Pathfinder

1 Answer

1999 Pathfinder shuts off while running.

After a few minutes of cranking the engine of my 1999 Pathfinder, it starts to fail, loosing lots of power and even it shuts down while running, no matter how much speed it is running. A mechanic scanned my vehicle and it indicated that it needed a little part inside the ignition. He changed it, but the problem never got solved. I've spent a lot of money looking for what it is (gas pump, gas tank draining, air filter, spark plugs, etc.) I don't know what to do with it. Please, any advise.

I have the same problem with my pathfinder, when the car is cold it runs fine, once it warms up it starts to shut off while running, when i'm on the freeway it runs fine. I found out that it may be MAss Air Flow Sensor. When I press on the little box on the car (mass flow sensor) the car tunes up, it runs better until i let it go. I found out that the part cost a few hundred dollars but I hav'nt got the part yet I have had a tune up, changed a few parts and I am almost sure that I have found the problem.

It could be one or all of 4 sensors. the MAF, the MAP or the idle position sensor or dirty fuel injectors. the fuel injectors can be cleaned with an over the counter fuel injector cleaner bottle that you pour in your tank.If these do not fix it, it will be the EGR valve or a vacuum leak to the EGR. Check the fuel injectors first by buying the cleaning product. then check for vacuum leaks around the Fuel injector housing. Buying some starting fluid and spraying it over the small hoses while the car is running will make the engine stall when the fumes from the starting fluid get into the system. then have it scanned again to more or less tell which sensor it is. it could very well work with the fuel injector cleaner.

Why did engine running, won't restart.

lots and lots of reasons, guessing. over 50 (bad engine?)
but does it crank?, no car starts unless it's cranked or
like my car, push started or gravity started (a 6sp m/t)
if engine fails to start , and cranks robustly (fast starter motor)
then
1: never tuned up, running 10 year old spark parts.
2: blow fuse. check fuses.
3:; lost spark, check spark.
4: flooding or loss of fueling. to unflood any engine, crank at wideopen throttle (oper, guide tells you that)
5: timing belt not changed at 60,000 miles it will fail, and will not start
or start have like 1/4 power.
6: lost compression in or more cylinders.?

or
get it serviced? if all that is too much work? or confusing.

I have a 1990 Ford E-350 5.7L that cranks but when you press on the accelerator, It cuts off. I have had the external fuel pump changed as well the fuel filter. The ECM elay has also been replaced.

A common problem is the crank sensor fails or gets out of adjustment. This device senses engine rotation and when it fails to send pulses the engine is assumed to be NOT rotating. When engine rotation ceases for a few seconds, the fuel pump is turned off. This is a safety feature to prevent fuel being pumped if vehicle is in wreck or whatever. The fuel pump is cycled on a few seconds when starting so that engine can start and then rotation is sensed and pump is allowed to continue.

Shuts down going down the road shuts off completely

vehicle shuts down while driving down road and does not start backup for at least 20 minutes, could be a bad crank sensor. if bad it will start and run fine, but it will keep shutting down until fixed.

99 pathfinder trouble running

There could be several concerns.
The fuel pump is weak and cutting out.
The ignition coils are getting hot and cutting off. The torque convetor in the transmission could be staying in lock up mode, This will cause the vehicle to die out , there is to much torque on the engine when at idle, causing the engine to die out.
The exhaust system could be clogged.
I would try and get the vehicle to a mechanic or dealer to check out .

My engines shakes really bad once it starts. it idles for a few mins then it shuts down. this is after it shut down on me on the freeway. all power went of and it just shut down on me. i think is the

I'm no bona-fide mechanic, but I've done a lot of work on cars. It may be you have an engine seriously out of timing. Or you might have loose or worn engine or transmission mounts. If the engine was shaking badly before shutting down, one result of that may be in the fuel system. If your car has a carbeurator, the shaking may have wreaked havoc on your float. If you have fuel injection, I'm not sure what to think.

Hopefully, you've gotten your precise answer before I even read your problem!

it sounds a lot like the Timing is off. I would locate an Authorized Mechanic to set the Timing.
