Sounds like your mechanic installed something per your request. Unfortunately, you have to order the specific part for your vehicle or the light will stay on because the vehicle computer is not detecting a secong airbag.

Under driver and passenger seats are wires that go to seat belt anchors. These are tensioner wires.Unplug the wires from the plug under the seat.clean and replace.Doing this while the ignition is turned off. Then turn ignition back on.In 90% of the time this is your problem.Constant movement of seat causes this or rear passengers kicking plugs off.Good luck phil.

SOURCE: SRS AIRBAG SERVICE 2004 XC-90 MODEL

Most common SRS fault in XC90's is the driver side SIPS bag (side air bag) located in the side of the seat. The wire runs close to the hinge for the backrest and after working back and forth can break or short.

SOURCE: I am trying to reset

If the airbag has been deployed, is is necessary to REPLACE the airbag (SRS) ECU. It is located below the center console. (See picture) It must be replaced because on your vehicle, it contains the crash sensors. If you do not replace it and hook-up new airbags and turn the key on, the new airbags will immediately deploy. There is no way to "reset" it.

Reset srs airbag

If the airbag light is on, there is a failure in the airbag circuit, and your airbag may fail to deploy in the event of an accident.
There is no "reset." You will need to have your airbag system serviced.

Dashboard airbag light comes on intermittently. Is this something to be concerned about? Should I take it in or just ignore it?

I would take it in. There maybe a crash sensor going bad. A safety system like the airbag system should have some type of warranty since we're talk about a 2005 Matrix. The Safety Board wouldn't like the manufacture if the airbag system only lasted less than 5 years.

TOYOTA MATRIX PROBLEM

Airbag: with an OBD II reader, check the status of the airbag and reset it. If it continues to turn on, there is a defect in the replacement airbag.

Whine: bushings, bearing on the wheel. A common wear item in FWD cars. Need to be serviced.

Tick: a common wear item is a loose or worn bushing on the suspension. Not critical but annoying. Was a service item released as a Technical Service Bulletin.
