    Hi,

Do the tires chirp/squeel when you make sharp turns, as if the front and back are fighting each other?

The viscous couplers in these are known to fail. Shop around for repair as the cost can very significantly. Perhaps shop online for the part IF you can someone that will install it (many shops frown on customers supplying the part). If you have a (non-dealer) Jeep specialist in your area this might be your greatest chance to save.

If the repair is something you want to tackle yourself, search the web for 'jeep viscous coupler replacement' or similar and you should be able to find instructions with pictures (better than a service manual if done correctly).

I cant get a straight answear on what rear axe i have. I have a 1996 grand cherokee orvis edition. 5.2 l engine. also when i make a sharp turn it seems like i get wheel hope . is this normal?

With a 5.2L engine, you should have a 3.73 rear back there. You can check on the axle itself to see for sure....there will be a metal tag on one of the 10 bolts that attach the rear gear cover. It will have the gear ratio stamped on that tag. The sharp turn wheel hopping is a common symptom on that style GC and probably due to worn front cv axles.

1996 grand cherokee-6cyl When making tight turns,

Hi, the likely problem is a worn out CV joint on one of your axles. Check for a torn boot on either axle. Once a toot tears open, dirt gets in and wears out the joint. Please let me know if you have more questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

98 Grand Cherokee Loredo 4X4: When turning the wheel all the way right the back right tire seem to freeze up then lunge grabbing traction. The same happens when the wheel is turned all the way left. ...

Is this a manual 4 wheel drive system that can be shifted into 2 wheel drive? These type of systems should be in 2 wheel drive for tight turns. The drive train locks the differentials to make it 4 wheel drive and with the 4x4 engaged it creates this lunge grabbing effect.

All wheel drive v8 issues 96 Jeep Grnd Cherokee Ltd

Any all wheel drive will give less fuel miles.(compared to ones you engage as needed) The Chrysler v8 is a time proven engine, pretty much a copycat of a chevy with some changes to make it their own. Overall, I haven't heard any really bad stuff about them. If you look at the problems on this site, there seem to be fewer jeep probs than all other vehicles. (even though some problems are really weird!!!)
What you really need to see is the vehicles history to make sure it's been maintained and has not been back to a shop for the same thing over and over.
Good luck!

Full time 4wd doesn't feel right on my 1995 grand cherokee laredo

normaly you wouldn't drive all the time in 4 wheel drive in less it is mad that way but the reason it jearks when turning sharp is because the front axle is tring to grip but the tire just bends and slips commen problem

It takes alot of torque to get the viscous coupling to turn.
There is nothing wrong with your vehicle.
If you can turn the wheel, then you need a 700.00 viscous coupler.(plus labor)
