Question about 1995 Subaru Legacy

1995 Subaru Legacy will crank but won't run.

This morning I went out to start the car and the engine would turn over, but it would not start. It has fuel in it and the battery is strong. I am not familiar with fuel injection so I don't know where to start troubleshooting.

My 1992 Subaru Legacy occasionally won't start. It starts fine 362 out of 365 times or so. This has been happening every winter for at least 6 years. It cranks fine (till I run the battery down) and only sometimes fires. This never has happened if the engine is warm (has been run in the last few hours). Ambient air temperature is always 50 degrees or less but often will start at 10 degrees or lower. I have never done anything to make it start other than run the battery down, get a jump, and then crank for a long time. Occasionally if I wait 20 minutes to 8 hours it will start fine when I come back to it, but usually I will have to continue to crank off and on for maybe half an hour to an hour. After cranking for a while I smell gas. Before it starts it will start to fire more regularly, and when it starts it runs a bit rough, maybe because of all the gas in the system. I have replaced the cam angle position sensor and coil.

I'm having the same problem, the engine turns over with the help of a new battery, but does not start. I suspect the ignitor or coil.....also the weather has been in the 20's and 30's, anyone have any ideas. Thanks, Mike

You can start by checking the fuel pump and testing it for current but it may also be in the starting system so check to see if the starting solenoid is working properly.

Water introduced through the fuel system. Drain tank and lines, refill, and add HEET.

SOURCE: alarm sounds and car wont start on my 1995 subaru

First try to reset alarm by inserting key in drivers door lock and lock and unlock-if this does not work try tail lock as well.

From what you have saud it sounds like the timing belt has lost a few teeth. In other words it is out of time.

Subaru Legacy 1995, will not start. Battery is fine, replaced battery connections; fuel filter, spark plugs and wires about 1 year old. Engine turns over and over, and over, just can't get it to ''fire,''...

was the check engine light on? have it scanned for a code if it was. remove the timing cover just enough to peek and just make sure the timing belt isnt broken. do you smell gas coming out of the exhaust while cranking the engine for 10 seconds? if not it could be gas related. or pull one of the plug wires off a spark plug and hold it a 1/4 inch or a little less away from the engine ground (ANY METAL PART OF THE ENGINE)see if it archs while cranking for 5 seconds, if it does not arch suspect that the camm and or crank sensor is a bad. PLEASE NOTE: this information is based on what you have told me. however if you have it scanned and give me the code pulled i will be better equipped to help you. if u run the tests i gave you and come up with nothing you may have to take it to your local technician for more complex tests to be done.

I just went through this same issue and it turned out to be the engine cooling sensor, a $50 part.
