Change the Rear Brake Lights

• Open the trunk and twist the retaining wing nuts off the studs holding the carpeted trim cover in place on the back side of the tail lamps.

• Pull the carpeted trim cover out of the way and pry the plastic caps out of the holes with the screwdriver tip.

• Unbolt the nuts holding the tail-lamp assembly in place using the socket set.

• Pull the tail lamp assembly away from the body of the Stratus. Grab the socket for the bulb in question and twist it counterclockwise to remove it. Pull the old bulb out by hand and insert the replacement bulb. Reinstall the socket in reverse of removal.

• Push the tail lamp assembly back into position and tighten the nuts back down onto the retaining studs using the socket set. Pop the plastic caps back into the holes, pull the carpeted trim cover back into position and reinstall the plastic wing nuts. Close the trunk.

Shut off your Volkswagen Passat before replacing a fuse. Find the fuse box on the driver's side of the car, under a plastic cover on dashboard to the left side, door open.

you will need to remove the tail lamp.
standing behind the vehicle, with the trunk open , inside on the affected side you will see a small plastic cover, remove this and under neath is a nut. remove the nut. now you have to gently prise the tail lamp out(taking care with paint work). start at the outside of the lamp. once removed, changing the bulb is straight foward. you will see the lugs for refitting the lamp.

F39 (15A) = Hazard warning lamps

For 2002 VW Passat the fuse box is located on the left side of dashboard behind a plastic cover (for left hand steering wheel vehicle). On inner face of the plastic cover you will find the fuse diagram.

Check brake pads/rear/ Probably need to be changed

if it is like a jetta - the headlight assembly needs to be unbolted from the radiator support-bottom bolts may be hidden behind bumper cover-,wire harness unplugged and the metal catch can be flipped to get plastic cover off where bulb is inside

1. Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable. 2. Open the liftgate to access and remove the two push-pins (3) that secure the rear lamp unit (1) to the side jamb (2) of the liftgate opening. 3. Pull the outboard side of the rear lamp unit rearward far enough to unsnap the two ball studs on the outboard side of the lamp housing from the two plastic grommets (6) in the quarter outer panel. 4. Pull the lamp away from the vehicle far enough to access and disengage the retainer on the body wire harness (4) from the tab on the lower lamp housing. 5. Disconnect the body wire harness connector from the pigtail wire connector (5) on the back of the lamp housing. 6. Remove the lamp from the lamp opening of the quarter outer panel.

alot of the times the plastic covers for the latch break and the plastic gets in the latch linkage and jams it up remove latch and look it over you will find the broken plastic just remove whats jamming it and reinstall

Yes, there is a "spear point" plastic clip that is still engaged into a socket type holder in the front outboard portion of the tail lamp assembly. Pry gently with a tape wrapped screwdriver at the front outboard corner of the assembly and the clip will release. You will then be able to see how the clip works and will be able to align and engage it first when replacing the tail lamp assembly.

3 clips total. 2 on outside of light unit, to get to these you have to remove central trim from over boot latch, side trims and carpets, toolkit out, seats folded down, luggage blind removed, small trim piece inside wheel well removed (2 bolts 1 nut), then you can get up behind the light unit, gently clip the 2 outside (red) clips out till the light unit becomes free. to get to the third there is a black plastic trim piece clipped to the light unit where the boot comes down and meets it, this covers the third clip, gently pop it off and you will reveal the third clip and the nut needed to be removed to release it.
