- is replacing the fuel pump in the olds 1991 98 regency real expensive? i have gotten quotes from $320 to as high as $500 to replace the fuel pump that is located in the gas tank. i am trying to see if it is worth it or not. This is one great 98 that has never really given me or my father any problems. It has 268,000 (no kiddin) on the same engine and i can still get 25 miles per gallon on the highway at 70 and 80 mph. kept it because of sentimental value, but wondering if it worth putting that kind of money into it. - I have been helping my brother in law with a similar issue, have changed the fuel pump and filter out as the code it threw indicated fuel pump or pressure. we have full pressure. however what we do not have is good spark, pull a plug and and turned it over and the spark was weak and sometimes not there.there is plenty of fuel as you can smell it and see fuel on the plugs...I even sprayed starting fluid into the intake and it still wouldn't even fire at all
I am wondering if it is the coil pack that is the next step however it might be the ecm. I need to know if there is a good test to determine which one is the issue..

you need to determine if its fuel or ignition problem
take a screwdriver pull off one of your spark plug wires at the plug and place the screwdriver in the boot hold it about 10 mm from the engine block and be sure to hold the handle back at the end have a friend spin it over if there is no spark you may have a bad crank sensor or coil pack
does the engine sound normal when cranked? if it sounds weak or spins faster than normal you may have a broken timing belt
there is a access valve on the fuel rail so you can check the fuel pressure if you have an appreate gauge
do you hear the fuel pump run when you turn the key to the run position ? It will only run for a couple of seconds
if you dont hear the pump run try resetting the inertia switch Check your owners manual for the location
