Do you know if its getting spark and fuel you can take one of the plugs out with it still hooked up to the plug wire set the plug electrode on metal and have someone crank the car over see if you can see any spark.if so take the fuel line loose take off the filter have someone turn it over see if fuel comes out if not bad fuel pump

I owned the SAME CAR. Love it except when the Distributor went south. You can not tell if the spark is good enough... you can have a Spark on the outside but the compression will require a much stronger spark.

If they put the Distributor in wrong, then you will have an issue.

IF the Timing Belt was moved, then you are going to be fighting this for a while. Best to Start from Scratch with a Good Mechanic and see where it leads you.

If you spray Ether into the Air Box, does the car start? No Start, you have a SPARK ISSUE. STARTS, you have a Fuel Deliver Issue

THE DISTRIBUTOR's are KNOWN to be defective,... Mine was intermittent but when I finally dropped the $225 on a distributor, all of my problems went away.

Did they cross the Spark Plug wires and that is causing your issue? Check the Firing Order.

I had the spark plug wires in the wrong place on the distributor cap and tried to start the car - I put them in the right place and now it won't start. what do I do?

ARE YOU SURE THE SPARK PLUGS/SPARK PLUG WIRES WERE THE INITIAL PROBLEM?

bad spark plugs should have either white or black discoloration on the spark tips, or be saturated with oily gunk on the spark tips. bad spark plug wires usually can only be ruled out by replacing them with new wires. your distributor(cap) may be to blame, so examine the distributor rotor for wear.

HOWEVER, first test the battery for charge with a voltometer/alternator. it should test 12 volts.

if the battery is charged, you should next test the ignition coil. unplug the ignition coil wire from the distributor end of the wire, and turn the key to the "start" position, while holding the distributor end of the ignitioin coil wire a fraction of an inch from a grounded/unpainted part of the car's metal frame/body. if the ignition coil is good, you will get an obvious spark/arc when the key is turned to the "start" position.

if the ignition coil tests good, you shoud then examine the distributor cap/rotor for wear, and replace the distributor cap if it is questionable. next, you move to the spark plugs/spark plug wires. replace the spark plugs if they are questionablke (as you have likely done) and then replace the spark plug wires. if all of this os done, and it still not start, then you PROBABLY have bad compression, or a broken timing belt/chain. there is a special meter to check piston compression, and, if the compression checks good, i FINALLYwould move on the the most expensive possibility of the timing belt/chain being broken.

i would recommend purchasing a "hayne's" or "chilton's" repair manual for your specific model vehicle at an auto parts store for around $20. all the diagnistic techniques/procedures i have mentioned are illustrated or described in these type of manuals. i am not aware of a method to check the timing chain in detail, buit a rough description of such a procedure would be to remove the cylinder cover, put the car in gear, and attempt to push/tow the car a very short distance while in gear/drive- afterwards checking the rocker arms to see if they moved while the vehicle was moved in gear. this procedure should also be described in detail in a "chilton's" or "hayne's" manual.

Wont start.

If it will turn over check to see if its fuel or fire. To check for fuel, spray quick start for a few seconds into intake. If it starts and stops. its fuel. Change fuel filter and check fuel pump. If it does not start its fire, Could be distributor cap, rotor, coil, spark plug wires or spark plugs. If it does not turn over it could be battery or starter. Check battrey connections, ground strap from motor to body and ground wire from battery to motor and body.

Rewired ford taurus spark plugs and when turns on it jumps what could i have done wrong?

If you replaced the distributor cap then there is a high possibility that you put the wires in the wrong firing order on cap.

If all you did was replaced the plugs, then I would pull each one out and recheck the Gap sizes with a feeler gauge. Also check to see if the spark/coil plug wires are touching metal or each other, which can cause the spark to arc out of the wire and never get to the spark plug. If I suspect an arc and do not see a physical problem, I wait until nighttime and look under the hood while engine is running...they stick out like a sore thumb. Also make sure that you did not put the wrong plugwire to the wrong spark plug.

When you change your plugs, you should also replace wires, cap and rotor.

My 84 Cortina bakkie 3.0 V6 has a terrible missfire.. I changed plugwires, the rotor looks fine, can it be the coil? In the morning when I start the van, it does not take, however, if i run a wire from the...

Your ignition circuit is faulty- it's probably the ignition switch itself that is defective. The misfire is that the distributor cap has a crack in it and the spark is directed to a particular plug wire and the spark has found its way to a non designated plug wire. It wouldn't be the coil, change the rotor and distributor cap be sure to mark your plug wires and reinsert into the proper hole in the distributor cap. Good Luck, Jim

Won't start, fuel pump runs at key on, spark at coil wire into distributor is yellow, little or no spark at plug wire ends

Sounds like bad distributor cap or rotor. If ones bad, might as well change both. Take off the cap and if there is a black color on the ends of the prongs, or on the end of the rotor, time to replace. Is it getting fuel into motor?
