Replace or renew ??chances are that if secondhand you have someone elses problem.how long does it take to run battery down?? have you disconnected battery and put an amp meter between cable and battery terminal to measure discharge ,does battery still go flat when disconnected .do you have a big amplifier in the boot .chances are you have answered your own question.work with elimination as the one thing that can cause a battery to discharge is a diode in the alternator.next is a radio /interior light or boot light ,amplifer in boot for the sound ,,now if the battery goes flat disconnected then renw the battery .or drain the acid out then flush it out with a hose ,swill with distilled water then refill with acid ,sounds drastic but it often works as a bit of paste can short a plate across.have a play because thats all a mechanic would do.And as for a dealer chances are that if you changed these parts yourself then they would not be very coperative to say the least .

My battery on my 2005 Boxter S is almost dead. Besides replacing it with a new one, would it be safe to jump start the battery with cables connected to my other car or should I trickle charge the battery?

It would be better for the battery to trickle charge it, although jumping it has been a fine and standard practice for cars as long as they have had batteries.

Put a new alernater an still over charging

Over charging could be the result of several things including:
    Faulty Voltage Regulator
  1. A car's battery will overcharge if the voltage regulator isn't working correctly. A voltage regulator is usually part of the alternator, and is used to keep a steady flow of voltage to the battery. If the voltage regulator is defective, it will send either too little or too much charge to the battery. If it sends too much, the car battery will overcharge. The voltage regulator is easily replaceable at an easily affordable price, sometimes for as little as twenty dollars, as of 2009.
  2. Faulty Alternator
  3. Sometimes the alternator itself can be at fault. The alternator is the device that converts the mechanical power of the engine into electrical power to charge the battery. When an alternator breaks, it usually stops creating electricity for the battery, which will then eventually die. However, if the wrong alternator is placed in the car, or if the alternator is running at the wrong pace, it will create too much energy for the car battery, causing it to overcharge. The alternator is another easily replaced part.
  4. Incorrect Charger Use
  5. If a battery charger is used to charge your battery outside of your car, improper use of the charger can result in overcharging. If a battery is placed on the charger too long, it can result in overcharging, and a significant decrease in your battery's lifespan and efficiency. This is why it is important to read about your specific battery and understand how long it needs to charge to be effective. Too much charge will lead to problems.
  6. Faulty Battery Chargers
  7. Sometimes chargers can be faulty. Their settings may be wired incorrectly, or the charges labeled incorrectly. As a result, your battery may be getting overcharged, even if you are carefully monitoring your charging. This is a problem that is hard to avoid, as manufacturing mistakes can happen anywhere, anytime without warning. It is a good idea to test your charger regularly to see if it is running correctly.
  8. Heat
  9. Extreme heat in the summer can also have an adverse effect on the car battery. If the battery has been previously overcharged, extreme heat can increase the problems caused by overcharging, and exacerbate any other problems with the battery. This problem can be hard to avoid if you live in a warm climate. The only real way to ensure safety against this problem is to avoid overcharge in the first place.

My 2001 Kia Sephia sluggishly turned over twice and then clicked when i tried to start it, no go. Is it probably just the battery, it is a few years old?

yes ,and now that it is colder outside a low or bad battery really shows up. Also are you sure no lights, radar detector, cell phone charger was left plugged in or on ? Dome light? I would go buy a new battery and replace if the battery is performing more poorly than usual. also keep in mind is all the connections clean and tight? what you can do is charge your battery up and go to a local garage and have them do a draw test (battery) and charging test on your car. takes 2-3 minutes and usually they don't charge. DEALER WILL. Maybe they will make you a little deal on a battery. Have those test before you spend 60-125.00 on something you might not need.

I RECENTLY had my engine replaced in my 2001 hyundai Elantra. This 'new' engine supposedly has only 10k miles on it. A new alternator had to be installed. The work was done by the dealer. I have had the...

The odds are the alternator is the problem again. I've installed brand new alternators in the shop that turned out bad. The battery barely had enough juice the crank the car and get it running. Then, the battery was the only thing keeping the engine running with the spark plug until the battery drain completely dead.

If the alternator was working normally, the alternator would have kept the energy up and keep the spark plugs going without the battery's help.

Basically, the battery's job is to start the engine only and the alternator's job is to keep the battery charged and supply energy for the car's needs.

1992ford ranger -alternator dont charge battery

If there is power to the big wire that is bolted on to the back of the alternator and no power out of the small wires that plug in to the alternator then it is possible you need to replace your alternator. start the vehicle and check to see if there is 14 volts at the battery while the vehicle is running if there is then the alternator is good if not replace your alternator and charge your battery with a charger to make sure you have a proper charge on the battery.

actually the only thing i can recomend is to have the alternator replace again for warranty and before starting the truck charge the batteries very well with a baterie charger make sure to charge them individually because with a low batterie the alternator has to put a lot of load and might burnt again
specially with dual batterie.
