Question about 1988 Plymouth Sundance

1 Answer

ELECTRICAL MY RADIO, DOME LIGHT, AND REAR WINDOW DEFROSTER NO LONGER WORK. THIS HAPPENED ONE DAY WHILE DRIVING WHEN THE DEFROSTER CAME ON BY ITSELF AND I COULD NOT MANUALLY TURN IT OFF. NO FUSES ARE BLOWN. I TOOK THE DASH APART PRETTY FAR AND CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT. I NOTICED A METAL BOX BEHIND THE CONSOLE UNDER THE DASH. IS ANYTHING ELECTRICAL IN THERE? BY THE WAY, MY BARBER HAS THE SAME PROBLEM WITH A DODGE OMNI.

1988 Plymouth Sundance: Radio, dome light, and rear defroster stopped working one day last week. I added fluid to radiator and then noticed these items did not work. I checked all connections under hood near battery and wiring harness. All fuses in fuse box are working, all front and rear lights work, as well as dash lights. All guages work. But...no radio, no dome light, no rear defroster? Is there an in-line fuse somewhere? Can anyone offer help? Thanks.

This is a good one. Get your hands on a wiring diagram. What you're looking for is a common wire that possibly links the radio, dome light, and defroster. You're looking for possibly a common power wire. Look for bad grounds under the dash. Mainly look for a common wire between the components. I have seen if one thing goes bad, it would effect things that you wouldn't think had anything to do with it. Honda is good about that.

Help! I have 98 Saturn SL2 that was live one minute dead the next

Sounds exactly like my 1999 SL2 which had "burning and arching" in the fuse box. Car one day be fine the next I'd take it to the store, come back in 10 minutes and wouldn't start, no radio, no power windows, no keyless entry remote, no rear defrost and even locking doors from inside power buttons it sounded odd. This fixed the problem by replacing the fuse box.

2002 wrangler gauges going out when i depress defrost switch

That definitely sounds like a short. If this started happening after the radio was installed, more likely than not, it's because they either spliced into the wrong wire or they nicked or cut the wire insulation, causing the short. You can look for yourself, just start at the defroster switch, and trace the wiring as far as you can go. Then do the same for the radio wiring. Somewhere along the line, you'll find the problem. Or take it back to Best Buy and make them fix the problem. I would advise caution on that though, as they can install a stereo, but that doesnt make them experts on automotive wiring. Best bet if you dont want to do it yourself, take the Jeep to a good garage or a dealer, have them find the problem, and if it turns out Best Buy caused it, take the bill for the repair and let them pay it.

Check to see if you have inadvertantly hit the push switch on the rear dome lite. Click it once and try
your lites again..I had this happen on my 93 jeep and that was the problem.

Dome light stays on, power windows don't work... 1999 Jeep

Check for a broken 12V+ or broken ground wire in the rubber boot that goes from the drivers door to the hinge pillar. Had this problem on mine and found both wires broken from years of flexing when door opened and closed. Don't try to splice the break, as the wire is too short and is also brittle. Run new (same guage) wire through the boot and splice inside the door and under the left side kick panel.
