Grand cherokee knocking from rear when towing

Only when i am towing this fault happens. Its NOT the jocky wheel grounding out as i have checked. When going over bumps, and weight is forced suddenly down onto the tow ball, there is what i can explain as metalic clunk clunk from the rear underside of the Jeep. As if something metalic is hitting on something thats moving. We have had the car checked over by the local towbar company and a garage but cant find anything. It only does it when towing, even a trailer with nothing in it. The only abnormality is its got a alko hitch ball and the trailers are not alkco hitches ? Any ideas ?

Possible that the ball size is wrong for the tow hitches
they do come in two sizes and there is just enough difference to allow movement at the ball

I think the tongue weight rating on the stock hitch is 600 lbs, so you are over that. You probably want to level out truck to handle better when towing, so the best way is to get air bag helper that raises the back end.

Are any of the parts on a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee interchangeable with a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee? rear axle, wheels, power-steering, hood hyrdraulics?

A few parts should be interchangeable. Most of them will not be however since the Grand Cherokee underwent a complete re-design for 1999. Some engines and transmissions will switch out. The rear axle in the 97 was commonly a Dana/Spicer 35. This was replaced with a larger rear differential in 1999 for increased towing capacity. The wheels should interchange ok, power steering system was pretty much the same and as long as the hydraulics (supports) on the hood are the same length they should work

I need to find out how to tow a jeep grand cherokee limited with full time 4 wheel drive all 4 wheels down behind a motor home. I hope you can help me. Thank you

You can tow in with the transfer case in neutral as long as all 4 wheels are on the ground like with a tow bar.If you use a tow dolly you will have to remove the rear drive shaft. This transfer case has a viscous coupling that will over heat if all the wheel dont turn at the same rate.

I want to know if a 2000 Suzuki Grand Vitara 4x4 with an automatic with a transfer case can be towed on a tow dolly without causing damage to trans, rear etc. since 2 wheels will be off the ground and 2 on...

This is when you put the shifter to NUETRAL, both shifter. The propeller may turn from where the 2 wheels on ground but it turns freely since the gears inside the transmission is disengaged.

I am looking for something to tow behind my motorhome. I have found a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport automatic 2WD. Can it be towed 4 wheels down without disconnecting the driveshaft?

2 wheel drive vehicles can be towed with all four whells on the ground for extended distances. Chrysler recommends a max speed of 30 MPH, but I know these vehicles can be towed at higher MPH. The 4x4 model Jeeps are the vehicles that are not recommended to be towed with all for wheels on the ground, but I know this too has also been done, but with drive shaft removal.

99 jeep grand cherokee limited, have no 4wd. fluid was empty when i got truck filled case, still no 4wd. 242 quad trac. put vehicle on lift shifted into drive rear wheels only engage. any ideas?

If it was ever towed with the wheels on the ground (not dollied) then the transfer case is probably "burned out" and you will need to replace it. These models of jeeps are full time 4WD and MUST be dollied or towed on a carrier or rollback type truck. Unless they have manual locking hubs.

Can I tow a jeep with a dolly?

You can. Elevate and tow from the rear wheels. Make sure you do not have 4wd engaged.

Audible knocking in rear of 1993 jeep grand cherokee laredo with 150,800 miles knocking only occurs when accelerator is not pressed

Sounds as If You Have A Chipped Tooth On the "RING GEAR" in the Differential (Rear Alex).
Is this Where You Hear The Noise Coming from? If So Remove Diff Cover With One Wheel OFF The Ground Trans In Neutral Rotate Drive Shaft and Look Closely For ANY Abnormal Surface on EACH Tooth of RING GEAR= the Large one And The "PINION GEAR" the Small one. If you find Chip or Rough spot Diff Must Be Rebuilt. Beyond that A Pinion Bearing can Also Make A Knocking Noise But the "GEARS" Will Be a Rhythmic Noise. I Hope this is of Some Help To You Good Luck !!

4x4 light and knocking noise after driving

If you hear the noise after the engine is turned off that noise is most likely the exhaust system cooling down. As far as the light for the 4 wheel drive that requires a test be run with a special scan tool while the problem is occurring.
