Miata whines only when accelerating

My 1990 Miata whines alot, but only when I accelerate. Whine seems to be louder at middle speeds. Once I stop pressing the gas peddle, the whining stops. Annoying, but the car keeps working well otherwise. Appreciate any thoughts you may have.

Older Miatas have unusually loud transmission noises. I had the same problem and helped, but did not eliminate it by changing the transmission fluid with Redline and installing some insulation on top of the transmission under the console. Hope this helps.

Also check the rubber air duct from filter box to throttle plate on intake, sometimes they split ,when engine torque at accelerating, opens the split enough and sometime sounds like a whining noise.

Check your have power steering fluid level. If its low look for a leak, it may be that your power steering pump is going. If so replace it ASAP.
That can cause a serious accident.

Have you tried to narrow the noise location. is it comming from the transmision safety plate? is it comming from the belts, or a pully? Have someone litely step on the gas and try to reproduce the noise while not in gear. If possible locate the noise, or narow it down to some sort of location. There are just to many variables to say what it is at this point.

Let net me know once you get more info

How to troubleshoot a high pitched whine in the right fron side of my Nissan Maxima 2004

Could be one of the belts slipping or worn out. Might even be the water pump bearing. Does the whine increase/decrease as you rev? Whine louder if you suddenly accelerate?

What will make car whine when accelerating with a 2000 cavalier

If its in your engine it may be your belt tensioner and since you are not real specific if its coming from engine compartment thes cars were notorious for having bad wheel bearings which will whine louder the faster you go.

'05 Chevy Colorado has an engine whine coming from rear of engine block on passenger side. Took the drive belt off and the whine is still there. The more I accelerate, the louder the whine.

There is nothing that can make a whining noise in the back of the engine. Likely the noise you hear is coming from either the transmission converter or pump. Before anything else is done, check the fluid level. If the fluid on the dipstick smells burned, you definitely have an internal trans problem.

Whine from rear differential when accelerating. the whine stops when I take my foot off the gas pedal.

when was the last time this was serviced.........as a replacement differential oil with additive MIGHT quieten this down.........however, this might be unlikely if the vehicle was not regularly serviced......if it only occurs whilst acceleratin this indicates wear on the main teeth...crown wheel/pinion......this COULD be an expensive repair....

High Pitch whine during acceleration

Hi Pullerwife,

I have a few suggestions for you,

First of all, check your air filter, make sure its clean, not clogged, and doesn't need to be changed.

I don't know how handy you are, but if you are fairly handy, check the idler pulley bearings, if your not, have a shop check it out, as a last resort.

Power steering pump/fluid being low is also a possibility, but thats usually more of a lower pitched whine then what you describe.

You say once the vehicle is warmed up, the whining stops. Does Weather seem to be a factor as well?

Hope I've helped, and don't forget to rate.
