Re: smoke and slight electrical smell
You have a wire shorting out in there somewhere. the best way to find out is to start the car turn on the headlights and take a look while the car is running to see if you can see smoke coming from the area you are talking about

There are two possible locations for this component
due to variation in production
under vehicle, passenger side, front of fuel tank,
mounted on frame in fuel line
under vehicle, driver side, front of fuel tank,
mounted on frame in fuel line.
Open the hood and look behind the headlight lens housing. There should be a place on the back of it with a socket and wires. Grab the socket and rotate it CCW about a 1/4 turn. The socket should be able to be pulled out. The lamp can be pulled off and replaced at that point. These light assemblies do vary a bit so you may encounter some slight differences.
