Question about 1990 Ford F150
1990 f150 5.0 xlt tranny is up shifting to soon into 3rd gear
Your modulator valve is unhooked, or bad. The modulator valve is what tells the transmission when to shift and what gear to shift to. It is located on either side of the transmission depending on the model, Im not sure which side your perticular model be on but it looks like a spark advance. I hope that helps you out.
