2006 Grand Caravan SXT - Exiting our driveway has an incline. We rise about 4 feet over a distance of about 30 feet what ever that translates to. After backing out we gp up the incline to get on to the road. The van will start out on the flat part fine and as it goes up the incline it will raise in RPM and loose pulling power as if in a high gear. Shifting in and out of gear fixes it. Also had a similier issue when turing off of the freeway and trying to accelerate. High RPM and no pulling as if it was out of gear or stuck in a high gear. I have also often heard a strange noise sometimes after it has been off for awhile and I shut the driver's door after looking for somthing in the van. The sound is like a small compressor or somthing for a few seconds. Id there somthing in the transmission which periodically adjusts electrically?

I had the fluid changed at 40k ( van now has 49k on it). The dealer said he would not recommend changing the filter until 60k.

Something new, in a recent bout of colder than normal weather, going from reverse to drive for the first time in the morning took about 3-5 seconds after the shift handle was moved. Seems ok later on when things are warmed up.

Would this point again to the solenoid and being aggravated when cold? Is it external to the transmission? Is it a major project and expense to fix?

    Thank You

Going from back of the story to front, the noise you hear is probably the electric fans in the engine compartment cooling the radiator. As for the lousy shifting, check the trans fluid level and condition. It should be a nice shade of reddish pink, not dark. If you haven't had the fluid and filter changed in 30 - 50k miles, you may want to try that. A good shop can also run diagnostics to see how the shift solenoid is working. These trannys are not the best. I have an 03 and an 07 and the 03 runs circles around the 07 with the same engine. I would never pull a heavy trailer with one.

You might consider having your codes read why because in time the trans will only go into 2nd and reverse i have a 98 grand caravan and i had to get a new selinoid pack if you are looking in the compartment and look down and right at the trans its on the front side of the trans very easy to remove there is sensor right above it you have to remove and the pack cost between $120-$180 not sure its been a year but i do know that auto zone is the cheapest hope this helps

Hi Fixy, I wonder how often during the preceding years has the transmission oil and transmission filter been replaced? I believe that is what I would do as a first action with that fault. Try it and let's see what happens. Regards John

No drive on a 1999 olds alero

CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID SOUND LIKE VECHICLE SLIPPING DUE TO LACK OF FLUID. CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID ON DIP STICK. WHILE ENGINE COLD FLUID LEVEL ON DIP STICK SHOULD FULL MARK.CRANK ENGINE LET VECHICLE IDLE TO WARM.THEN HOLD FOOT ON BRAKE SHIFT THROUGH ALL GEARS FEW TIMES CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL IF LOW ADD FLUID UNTIL YOU GET TO FULL MARK.IF YOU HAVE THE TRANSMISSION WITH NO DIP STICK.YOU NEED TO CHANGE TRANSMISSION FLUID + FILTER. YOU NEED 7 QUARTS OF TRANSMISSION FLUID.BUY DEALERSHIP TRANSMISSION PAN GASKET ITS THICKER MADE DIFFERENT WONT LEAK FLUID. THE TRANSMISSION GASKETS AT AUTO PARTS STORES TOO THIN LEAK FLUID BAD.

My 2000 Toyota 4runner V6 125k miles automatic transmission started slipping on cold starts especially in the morning. After starting up, putting in drive and pressing the gas pedal first gear doesn't...

Low transmission fluid is usually the only reason power engages late or slippage occurs. But changing the transmission fluid again would not hurt. The stuff really shouldn't deteriorate like engine oil. Be sure to not run the vehicle many miles until the problem is completely resolved < 100 miles. One easy check would be to make sure the transmission lines are well connected and maintain pressure as well as fluid level. The good thing is that Toyota has a reputation of very good transmissions.

How long before a transmission is hot enough to slip

It should not be a matter of how hot, but when. If it only happens when the car is hot then I would check the level. While checking the level, I would see if there is any blackish stuff in the fluid. If there is then I would have your tranny rebuilt because the clutch material is breaking down and could be the cause of the slipage.

Your car overheating is either low coolant or its the thermostat. The thermostat is what tells the car to add coolant and turn on fans.
Your tranny slips could be because low transmission fluid, which was the cause with my VW. Or your tranny is bad, which is common with VW.
When your car shakes when you accelerate does it seem like its choking?
