A friend of mine has the same car as you, and in his car, he has to drop the gear selector to "2" in order to get the car going. When he drops it down to 2, about two seconds later the car goes into gear, and then he can drive it by shifting manually up. Once up to about 20mph he can put it in drive and leave it there. He only has to drop down to 2 when he comes to a stop. We've isolated the problem to the transmission control unit, which is under the carpet in the front passenger footwell. It's frighteningly expensive from a dealer (around $1600), but places like www.shokan.com (an Audi salvage yard near Woodstock, NY) sell it for less than $300. That's the route he's gone (he's waiting for it to arrive now).

Automatic or stick? I'm assuming automatic.

How long / far since last transmission fluid change? If you are lucky, probably past time for transmission fluid and filter.

Hope this helps.

About every 200 miles, check engine lite comes on with code P0741, tourqe converter clutch circute per. or stuck off. Also, min oil indicater comes on, we check the oil and it is at proper level

Hi!

The torque converter Clutch solenoid is responsible to hold the pressure when you put your foot on the brakes and that's why automatic transmission don't let the car stall at a stop sign. So you might check the transmission oil for the proper level and hopefully you wont need to change the torque converter clutch Solenoid. Good luck

1996 audi a4 transmission hard shifting

Get the transmission scanned at the dealership. If it has incorrect gear ratio code stored, it needs a transmission. Only the torque convertor or valve body can be replaced for any repairs at the dealership, so it needs to be diagnosed correctly. Any authorized ZF transmission repair shop can also repair them, more than the Audi dealerships can, so thats another alternative.

Gear box has rough changes in traffic ie between traffic lights. but goes away when you accellerate through it.

For a manual transmission, Check the gear oil in your transmission, sometimes when it's low the shifter will be hard to shift even with the clutch in. For an automatic transmission, check your transmission fluid, and if you can, do a transmission filter/gaskit service. Good luck!
