Question about 1996 Toyota Avalon

1 Answer

Check engine light not functioning

I have a 1996 Avalon with 214000 miles and the check engine warning light does not illuminate when you turn the key prior to starting the engine. The other warning lights come on and then go off and seem to work properly.

What you need to do is either check the fuses but more likley if you have a car with that much wear and tear the you have 214k on it the little led lite bulb is prob just burnt out you can replace it yourself or if your a good customer to a garage they would probably just do it for free i used to all the time.. You can get the bulb from advance or auto zone for 3 bucks if you need any other help or just information on how to change it let me know id be glad to help also please rate me if you get a chance..

Thanks, Steve

The instrument cluster (10849) carries out a display proveout to verify that all warning/indicator lamps and monitored systems are functioning correctly. When the ignition switch (11572) is in the ON position with the engine (6007) off, the following indicators will illuminate:

When I turn my key to the on position the check engine light will not illuminate and the car will not start. If the check engine light illuminates the car will crank fine. What is going on?

Could be a problem with the key switch or the wiring. Someone would need to find out if the computer is getting power when the key switch is on.

Headlight warning buzzer not working on 2006 toyota celica

instructions:
  • 1 Turn the ignition key to the "II" position.

  • 2 Check the lights on the dash. You should see a variety of dash lights light up. One of those lights will be a "Check engine" light. This light should stay lit with the ignition key in the "II" position. The rest of the lights should go out. If the "Check engine" light begins to blink, you may have a problem with one of the vehicle's electronic components. Consult your owner's manual or call your dealership for possible servicing issues.
  • 3 Start the engine. The "check engine" light should go out after a few seconds. If it does not, this can indicate either a maintenance interval has been reached or a more serious problem with the vehicle's emissions control system. Again, it is advised to consult your owner's manual or call the dealership for service.
  • 4 Check for an illuminated "SRS" light on the dash. The SRS light indicates a problem with the supplemental restraint system, i.e., the airbag, on the Camry. This needs to be serviced by a professional mechanic.
  • 5 Check for an oil light on the dash. The oil light is in the shape of a small oil canister. When this lights up, it indicates low oil pressure. Low oil pressure is caused by a blockage in the system, a weak oil pickup or oil pump, or low oil levels in the engine. Check and see if your Camry is overdue for an oil change. It is recommended that the oil be changed at 5,000 miles or every six months.
  • 6 Check for the low fuel warning. The fuel light on the Camry is on the fuel gauge near the "E" on the gauge face. The low fuel light means that you have to refuel your vehicle.
  • 7 Check for the seat belt warning light. The seat belt warning light is a picture of a figure wearing a seat belt. If your seat belt is unbuckled, then this light will illuminate (along with a warning chime) indicating that you should buckle up.
  • 8 Check for an orange car with lights on (on the dash lights). This warning light indicates that one or both of your brake lights has failed, or the electrical resistance in the bulb filament indicates that it is about to fail and will need service soon.

Yellow light on dash, emissions workshop warning

Volkswagen vehicles built after 1996 are equippedwith a system of sensors known as On Board Diagnostics (OBD II). These sensorsmonitor many vital engine functions and help to lower harmful emissions. Whenone of these sensors fails it sends a signal to the engine computer to illuminate the "CheckEngine" light in the dash. To clear this light you will need a diagnosticcode scanner. Scanners range in price from $40 to $120 and are available atmost auto parts stores.

    1. Connect the diagnostic code scanner to the vehicle's diagnostic port. Theport will be located in the dash below the heater controls.. 2. Turn the key to the"Run" position, but do not start the engine. 3. Press the button on thescanner that reads "Scan for trouble codes." 4. Wait for the scanner to finishscanning the engine's computer. 5. Press the button on thescanner labeled "Clear all trouble codes." 6. Disconnect the diagnostic codescanner from the vehicle. Toyota Avalon 2006, I ahve a VSC indicator light on, the Slip indicator/traction control system off light is on and a check engine light is on. Are they all related or seperate, and what does it mean when...

VSC is Vehicle Skid Control. The system is usually on, but when you turn it off (on my mother's 01 Avalon, it's on the knee bolster, below and to the right of the steering column), the indicator comes on in the cluster to let you know it's turned off - it's just a reminder to you that you don't have that safety net activated. The way the car is set up, even if you turn it off, when you shut down the engine and then restart it later, the system is rearmed automatically.

What I'm thinking is, since you've obviously had the engine on and off and the VSC OFF and TC OFF warnings are still illuminated, you probably have a problem with either an ABS sensor, a yaw sensor, or something related to those, as those systems rely on a bunch of sensors to work. If they have failed, it should illuminate the check-engine light. Stop at Auto Zone or Advance Auto Parts and have them scan the car's computer (it's free). They'll give you a list of the fault codes that come up. If you post them up here, I can define them for you and help you solve the problem - just post them as a reply or follow-up on this posting.
