First of all, check all your fluids , there may be a clutch fluid reservior up in the engine compartment. If that is ok check the gear oil in the top side of the transmission by unscrewing the plug with a ratchet end, you may need to get a long one to break it loose. make sure you replace any fluids with the correct fluids. If its beyond that , I would take it into the shop.

i bet it does shift in to gear, if you start engine in 1st or REV.gear.right.
if you start engine in gear, with clutch depressed, and the car moves
that means clutch failure.
it can be a bad clutch linkage, easy fix.
there are 2 systems. (3 on relics) cable and a hydraulic acuator.
i can never tell what others can do, some cant tie shoe laces others fly to moon..
im too lazy no wto look up the linkage on yours.
why not just look.
see clutch master cylinder above pedal on fire wall?
that is hyd. if missing and is cable ? bingo cable system.
cable play never set ever? do so now, called free play.
if cable end moves 1inch its good.
if the slave cylinder dont move it or or the MC is bad. replace both,
both are easy fixed, ask.
The subaru gear linkage from the gear stick to the transmission often breaks or gets jammed on something. Look under the car where the gear leaver goes down to the transmission and make sure there is nothing obstructing it. Otherwise try adjusting the clutch linkage to make sure it is completely disengaging.
mcdevito75 here, You"ll have to manually turn the camshaft gear and other gears to re align the marks, use the starter to align the crankshaft marks. Of course you"ll need the shop manual to show you these marks. Worse case, have the car towed to you local shop for repair.
It sounds very much like your clutch is slipping. If the engine revs continue to rise when in gear and the car does not increase it's speed accordingly then if it is a manual car then you need a new clutch.
