Question about 2001 Ford Expedition

1 Answer

My car has been dying for no reason in gear while I'm driving.

2001 Expedition XLT... 120K miles on it. Replaced all pick-up coils and spark plugs 4 months ago. Running great otherwise. No engine lights are on. But while driving it, it will die while in drive for no apparent reason doing high speeds/low speeds. Plenty of gas, and no other problems that I can tell! It almost caused a serious accident because of traffic situations. It just dies while I'm driving. You can immediately restart it and go. But there seems to be no rhyme or reason why it dies. Also it has a stealth remote on it. Someone suggested it might be malfunctioning...I've had it tested at several auto parts stores. No codes...?????

I have a 2007 Expedition Eddie Bauer and have the same problem. Twice my truck died on me while in traffic. Both times I was making a right hand turn from a parking lot. Ford can not find anything wrong with it...typical.

Change the pick-up coil. You have to remove the distributor to do it.
Cheapest way is to buy a reman distributor and just replace it. Just remember which way the rotor is facing before you remove it.

Ignition coils

You didn't put a problem in there,
you never got the bad coil or coils out.

If you went by some coil codes, that's why

You may have to walk a new coil, replacing the
old one & test drive 20 miles & spend a few days
doing so.

The Spark Plugs can't be over 3 years old or
50,000 miles & front O2 Sensors over 100,000 miles

My 2007 expedition has jerky feel when in low speed and someone suggested it was the ignition coil . How do I change it?

If you never installed the new one piece
spark plugs, that is the number one reason

That should be a 3 valve 5.4 & at least 2 or
more plugs are are going to break on removal
Research that on internet first. There is a lot
about the ford glued together plugs

Only Champion makes the correct spark plug
CHA 7989 at NAPA about $16.00 ea

You will get at least 1 bad COP Ignition Coil
a year, on all Fords from 1998 thru 2011

If you got 100,000 miles on it ,the front (2) O2 Sensors
surely slowed to a crawl, change them. Only the ones
in converter inlet

Clean MAF Sensor

You can not drive any of these vehicles, especially a
ford product & never look for problems through out the
year

You have to be pro active & expect issues & actually go looking
for things or have it act up or break down. Too much in the
way of electronics.

My 2002 Eddie bauer 2x2 Expedition has 126000 miles on it and recently had the spark plugs and coil replaced which costs a lot of money. A day after I picked it up from the dealership. The engine died...

fuel pumps are notorious for self fixing, usually towing the vehicle is enough to make it work again, they develop a flat spot in the armature and vibration usually makes it work but eventually it will die altogether

WHERE DO I FIND THE SPARK PLUGS?

on each valave cover there are 4 igintion coils, under the coils u will find the spark plugs, let me warn u this is best left to a proffesssional, changing plugs is a 3+ hour job in this truck, also they don't need to be replaced but once every 100,000 miles, any sooner is a waste of money and time.

Engine code states cylinder 2 misfire. Replaced

sounds like a bad injector, just connection at the injector, also check for leaks at intake, one more thing , do a compression test on that cylinder start there, good luck.

Ignition Distributor location

There is no cap and rotor, as the vehicles igntion system is DIS (digital ignition system). The recommended tune-up on these motors require sparkplug and coil replacement. The coil type in this vehicle is COPs (coil over plugs). Usually moist and oxidation develope on the sparkplug chamber walls from faulty or worn coil boots. This causes the coil to short, they must be replaced at 75,000 miles at the same time the sparkplugs are replaced. Typical symtoms are: Vehicle stalls (restarts and runs normal), intermitted jerks/sputter while driving, misfires, rough idle, severe power loss. Hopefully this helps

My Expedition is idleing extremely rough. I just changed the spark plugs, fuel filter and air filter and no codes are coming up. It has 97000 miles and had maintained proper maintenance. Any ideas???

Was it doing this before you changed the plugs? This is coil over plugs correct? Double check you pugs and if it is coil over be sure to use die-eletric grease on the spark plug boots. Good Luck
