Question about 2000 BMW 5 Series
We have a 2000 528i with 111,000 miles on it, we bought it used about 15,000 miles ago. It ran GREAT for months! The car starts really rough now, and almost sounds like it's "choking". It runs rough until the RPM's are up, then shakes again at low speeds and when sitting at a light or stop sign. It had done this off and on for about a week, then the "service engine soon" light came on and now it does it every time we start it. My son said it feels "like one of those old fashioned cars that are bumpy". It does! The oil lights still have 3 green bars on the gauge. We don't yet have a trusted mechanic for the car, so any and all info would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!
I had the same issue with my 2000 528i. You more than likely need to have the Vanos seals replaced. BMW will tell you that the Vanos unit needs to be replaced but the problem is more than likely isolated to the OEM seals that shipped with the Vanos. This issue has been reported by several BMW owners. This issue has been thoroughly documented and reported to BMW in an effort to seek a corrective fix. Since BMW failed to address the problem, the guys that investigated the issue started their own company providing superior Vanos seals to the deficient OEM Vanos seals.
The company is Beisan Systems, LLC. I ordered their Vanos seal kit and had them installed at a local BMW performance shop for less than half of what BMW wanted to charge me for a Vanos replacement with the same faulty seals. Besian also provides step-by-step DIY instructions; if you have the time.

If the symptoms came on rather suddenly, another possibility is one or both of the cam angle sensor(s). The 2000 528i has one for the intake cam and one for the exhaust cam. Our car was running a rough at idle, drove ok, but occasionally stalled at traffic lights. It turned out to be the intake cam angle sensor. I changed it my self without a lot of trouble.

Sounds like a cam sensor to me
