Question about 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport 4WD

1 Answer

Screeching sound when suv is running and you turn on the ac.

I had first thought it was the brakes and or belts then had them all worked on and replaced but screeching did not go away. I was driving my suv down the road and I turned on the ac and immediately the noise started, very loud screeching, so I immediately turned off the ac and it the noise stopped altogether.
Is this noise coming from a belt to the ac and is this pretty standard? Does it need to be changed or just worked on? Please let me know what it could be.

Sorry but my 01 MMS is not a 4 wd just the regular one. :)

Thanks, AM

Hey Mike - I'm the 2001 Outback wagon owner... you said you think a belt went - would that cause such an array of problems? burning brakes smell, battery light on, steering limited, screeching brakes...

If one of the pulley or alternator seized up (would cause belt screeching and smell) finally let go(pop sound) then none of the accessory drives working (no belt).

My steering wheel is screeching whenever I turn it hard on my 97 Camry. The steering fluid is full. Your thoughts?

that wold be a loos belt. you mit wont to check for cracks if the belt is old or worn you mite wont to replace it.

2006 2 wd grand vitara. I went to the store and when i came out i tried to reverse my suv but the steering wheel hardly turns and the suv makes a screeching noise. The wheels refuse to turn. I can drive...

the belt will make a screeching noise for the power steering if it is loose or worn out. check out the belt, or the power steering pump front bearings failed and will not let steering pump to spin. have a good day !!

1993 nissan altima what could be causing a screeching

It probably is a belt. You should look under the hood and check for a loose belt. Tighten as necessary. You should not be able to deflect the belt more than 1/2" in the center of the span of the belt.

Brakes will also make a screeching noise when they are worn out. This noise will also go away when you stop (of course). The sound is quite different than the belt sound.

Belt problem?

sounds like the AC compressor may be defective and pulling an excessive load on the engine. You should also have the automatic belt tensioner checked

My serpintine belt started making a loud screeching noise, and eventually slipped off. I got it put back on but its still making a screeching noise. All of this started after i got the AC compressor fixed....

One of the belt pulleys likely has a bad bearing. watch the pulleys for binding while it's running or remove the belt and check each pulley by hand. AC puts more strain on the belt...if the belt is not new and pulleys check out, (and tensioner is working properly) change the belt.

Screeching sound from engine

I can pretty guarantee you it is your altrnator belt.. By turning on your headlights, it creates more load on the alternator, which in turn makes the belt work harder. To confirm, you can try some silicone spray on the belt. The noise should change or disappear. This happens a lot in winter when dirt gets on the belts.
Usually that will solve it. If not, you may have to get the belt changed.
Good luck,

Dan

Loud rattling-screeching sound thought was belt but belt looks fine- not constant- worse when idling or just turning on. 2004 zx3 hatchback.

One of the pulleys is not turning. Could be AC, alternator, or one of the idler pulleys.Take a careful look with a good light. My bet is the idler pulley.
