Screeching sound when suv is running and you turn on the ac.
I had first thought it was the brakes and or belts then had them all worked on and replaced but screeching did not go away. I was driving my suv down the road and I turned on the ac and immediately the noise started, very loud screeching, so I immediately turned off the ac and it the noise stopped altogether. Is this noise coming from a belt to the ac and is this pretty standard? Does it need to be changed or just worked on? Please let me know what it could be.
Sorry but my 01 MMS is not a 4 wd just the regular one. :)

the belt will make a screeching noise for the power steering if it is loose or worn out. check out the belt, or the power steering pump front bearings failed and will not let steering pump to spin. have a good day !!
One of the belt pulleys likely has a bad bearing. watch the pulleys for binding while it's running or remove the belt and check each pulley by hand. AC puts more strain on the belt...if the belt is not new and pulleys check out, (and tensioner is working properly) change the belt.
I can pretty guarantee you it is your altrnator belt.. By turning on your headlights, it creates more load on the alternator, which in turn makes the belt work harder. To confirm, you can try some silicone spray on the belt. The noise should change or disappear. This happens a lot in winter when dirt gets on the belts.
Usually that will solve it. If not, you may have to get the belt changed.
