Question about 2002 Saturn L-Series

2002 Saturn idling high then drops to normal

'02 Saturn SL (almost 200k miles) just started idling high for 5-6 seconds at 2000 rpms then slowly drops down to normal idle. I think it may be higher than normal rpms through shifting also, but maybe I'm just paranoid now that I've noticed the other problem. Thanks for the help!

Car stays on high idle

I have had this happen on saturns before and it has turned out to be a bad intake gasket. The gasket cracks allow extra air to get into the engine causing it to idle high. It also will normally have the check engine light come on indicating a cylinder misfire. 4 thumbs up is appreciated if this helps

Idle runs too high when I come to a stop, for about 5 seconds.

The throttle body may need to be cleaned. Take off the induction hose to the throttle and open the plate. Make sure the vehicle is not running. With the throttle plate wide open, soak a cloth rag with carb and choke cleaner and work the rag around the inside of the body especially where the plate's closed position is. remove the rag and spray a small amount of carb cleaner down the throat of the throttle body. replace hose and run vehicle at 1500 rpm's for a few seconds. This should fix the idle. It should be idling at about 800 rpms.

Pull the engine coolant temp sensor, I know it sounds funny but do it if your looking at the engine it is located on the right side of the head.. chances are the ceramic tip on the sensor is cracked.. 15 dollar fix or so should take away from the high idle.. let me know how it works
