Question about 1992 Ford Taurus
I have a 1998 ford explore 4.0 Sohc.My transmission won't go in reverse it drives in drive find, it gave no indication of going out.I had this problem with two years that why I had to get a replacement and now two years later this one is doing the same thing, is there a senor or electrical problem? or is my transmission gone.
Hi. It is unfortunate that you are experiencing the same problem several years apart. Further still, within the confines of the automatic transmission, reverse is governed by what is known as a reverse clutch pack. When you shift into reverse, you move a valve in the valve body that redirects fluid to a set of asbestos disc that enable the car to go backwards.
Most transmission shops will not open a transmission just to specifically repair one system, as it is paramount to opening a can of worms. It is better to replace a transmission than the actual repair.
If you would like to correspond further with me on this or any other issue, please feel free to do so.
