1. Not enough information and you have not identified the vehicle either.


2. Coolant cannot leak to the PS system. They are entirely separate systems and unconnected.

3. If you have an auto transmission then in some models there is a section of the radiator used for cooling the auto transmission hydraulic fluid . IF there is a breach in the radiator between the 2 sections then coolant can flow into the auto trans fluid and vice versa. If you find there is pink hydraulic fluid in the coolant when draining the radiator then it will be auto transmission fluid.

In that event you will need to replace the radiator and to have the auto trans serviced now or the transmission will fail if the hydraulic fluid has been contaminated.

For vehicles without ATF filler tubes and dip sticks accessible in the engine bay, the ATF needs to be pumped in from the side of the transmission and from under the car. There is a specific filling procedure that must be followed. If your particular model has no Auto transmission fluid filler tube with dip stick in the engine bay this is what must be done. If unsure on your particular model then check your owners manual or contact the dealer service people.

If your model has no engine bay ATF filler tube I suggest you get the dealer to do it for you or a transmission business that knows these transmissions and will not overfill it. The vehicle needs to be up on a lift and perfectly level in cases when fluid is required to be pumped into the Auto Transmission from under the vehicle.

These transmissions are sealed units and if fluid needs to be added then you will have a significant leak that needs to be attended to. Running the transmission with low fluid which requires adding to will result in expensive damage to the the unit. If you have a model with no engine bay transmission filler tube and dip stick to check the auto fluid level you will have no idea how much fluid is being lost if you have a leak.

Auto transmissions cool fluid by running it through radiator, the core cracks and mixes the 2 fluids, have the radiator checked out. a way to test this is to remove the transmission lines and joining it with a small thin pipe, then running the engine. if water comes out of the transmission ports you need a new radiator

Change transmission oil


Hi Peter, If your Camry has an automatic transmission, for normal driving the auto fluid should be changed every 40,000km, there should be a drain plug on the transmission pan that takes a 10mm hex drive or 17mm socket to undo. You have two choices after driving the car onto ramps or jacking up and supporting on jack stands so you can safely get under the car. 1 - You can loosen and remove the transmission drain plug to let the auto fluid drain out into a container (careful not to lose the sealing washer) refit and tighten the drain plug and washer again. Remove the auto transmission fluid level dip stick, using a suitable funnel pour about 2.5 litres of suitable new auto trans fluid back into the transmission via the dipstick tube (I believe they take dexron 2 of 3 type fluid). Start the car and move it onto a level surface. With the engine running, handbrake on and brake pedal applied, shift the transmission from park through every gear selection slowly into 1st gear, then back to park. Leave engine running. Wipe the dip stick & insert it back into the dip stick tube fully, remove and check where the fluid level mark is on the end of the dipstick. If the fluid level indicates low or does not show at all, add 100ml of additional fluid and recheck the level till the fluid reaches the full mark on the dipstick. 2 - The second option is everything in the first option but includes replacement of the transmission filter and pan gasket. I would only do this if the car had travelled high km or the pan gasket was leaking. At the point where you've drained the old fluid into a container and refitted the drain plug and washer, remove all the transmission pan bolts and the transmission pan. If you have the time to let the fluid drain overnight prior to removing the pan it's a good idea because once the pan is removed, fluid will continue to drip from the transmission. You'll need to remove the old pan gasket, some may be stuck to the pan and or transmission, a razor blade type gasket scraper can be good for this but be careful not to scratch either surface when cleaning off the old gasket. Remove the bolts/nuts that hold the transmission filter onto the bottom of the transmission. Careful caus more fluid may drain out of the transmission or filter once removed. Fit the new filter and filter tube gasket & bolts/nuts, careful not to over tighten. Fit new pan gasket, pan and bolts. Continue with fluid filling procedure from option 1. I would suggest you only use option one and remember to double check the drain plug is tight. Also, remember to dispose of the old fluid correctly. Cheers

How do I check my tranny fluid on my 01 Subaru Impreza?


I assume you have the 4 speed auto and that it is red auto transmission fluid which is leaking.

You obviously have a leak from the transmission itself, or from a transmission fluid hose, which must be identified and fixed urgently. The leaking fluid is no doubt coming into contact with the hot exhaust system (often by blow back) which will give you a burning fluid smell.

You must ensure you check the transmission fluid level immediately and top it up with the correct spec fluid. Otherwise the transmission will malfunction if very low on fluid and you will potentially damage it.

You need to need to get the vehicle to a Subaru dealer for service or to a competent/reputable auto transmission specialist to have the leak identified and fixed as soon as possible.

CHECK THE TRANSMISSION FLUID TO SEE IF IT IS LOW. THERE SHOULD BE A COLD LEVEL AND A HOT LEVEL. WITH THE TRANS IN PARK AND HOT, ENGINE RUNNING PULL THE DIPSTICK TO SEE IF THE TRANS NEEDS FLUID. WHEN ADDING, MAKE SURE THE PROPER FLUID IS USED. IF THE TRANS FLUID LEVEL IS OK BUT THE TRANS FLUID SMELLS BURNED OR IS VERY DARK THEN HAVE THE TRANSMISSION SERVICED WITH FLUID AND FILTER. Most common causes of your problem are the following:
  1. Low transmission fluid
  2. Old/brown transmission fluid
  3. Broken transmission line (any pools of trans fluid on the ground?)
  4. Broken transmission vacuum line
  5. Transmission needs adjustment
  6. Transmission itself needs repair
The first 3 can be checked visually, the last 3 most likely need a mechanic to verify.

Several things could be causing your problem:
  1. Auto transmission fluid is low
  2. Auto transmission fluid needs changing; this is an area that gets neglected by a lot of people;check the fluid and if its brown or gives off a burning smell, it needs changing. Very old transmission fluid will cause slipping in the transmission; if this is the case, it should be changed along with the filter

p.s. If you have the fluid changed, make sure it's done from the tranmission pan, not through the filler tube; siphoning through the filler tube can be hazardous to the transmission, especially cars with a lot of miles
