1996 Grand Jeep Cherokee Immobilser/key fob problem

Hi, My jeep was working fine one day the next day key fob wouldnt work, so thought maybe batteries, got them changed still nothing, the cars battery was fine the car could be unlocked manually, immobilser light still flashing on dashboard, can turn ignition and see dashboard lights but the car will not start, i presume because the immobiliser and key fob are not talking, please help me, it is an old jeep I know but i love my car and cannot afford to talk to Jeep as they want a fortune just to look at it and I cannot get it to them as i moved house the day the car broke down and had only one free lift with a transporter so took it to my new home.. thanks goldie

Goldie try to lock and unlock the passenger door...there are disarm switches in both doors...the drivers side may have failed but the passenger side may still work...if that dont do it you may need a dealer because the module for the remote keyless entry may have faied

try the unlock button on the keyring to disable the immobilser it worked on my dad's 1996 grand cherokee today. We have found this car has lots of electrical issues aleted to the immobilser. or fuses in the immobilser

Where is the immobilser located on my 1996 jeep grand cherokee ltd edition? And can it be bypassed or disabled?

It is located behind the glove box. you must take off the glove box door, and then the plastic bottom of the glove box..

may i ask why you want to disable it?

1996 jeep cherokee won't shift out of low sometimes. then the next day it works fine

Assume this is an automatic transmission.

I would check the transmission fluid level, then checnge the fluid & filter.

Could be colder weather causes more problems.

No owners manual need one free, cant figure out alarm or fuse box

Is the alarm the factory alarm or is it aftermarket? If it is the factory unit try using the remote fob to turn it off (check batteries in the fob). If you lock the car door and reach in the window and open from the inside door handle it will trigger the alarm. Stick the key in the door lock and turn to unlock. It's been awhile since I looked at these Jeeps so memory may not be clear.
