Question about 1996 Ford Escort 4 Door

Engine dieing Hi, I recently put Morrisons fuel in my 16V, 1.6 litre, 1996 Ford Escort Zetec engine. I usually buy BP or Shell fuel but I can only assume the problem is being caused by putting Morrisons fuel in. Upon starting the engine it sometimes revs between 500 and 1,500 rpm, with it not settling at 1,000. Sometimes it does settle but after about 5-10 minutes of driving if I let it drop below 1,000 rpm the engine stops. Also, upon acceleration the car is very cumbersome. The best way to describe it is that when I put my foot on the accerlerator it feels like the engine is being starved of fuel! I've checked the oil and only had a service about 6 months ago. Hope you can help! Cheers, Ben.

Most zetec engines seem to have the same problem!!! 60k miles plus the engine revs up when idle and some time cuts out...from past experiance i have discoverd the problem is the I V C.. idle valve control this will need removing and cleaning.its mounted on the rear of the engine difficult to get to id recomend to consult a haynes manual...some garages will say to buy a new one(£60-80) but i cleaned mine and its fine now..hope this helps

Sounds like bad carbon build up, have you tryed using fuel injection cleaner yet? Because of the buildup, I would suggest putting it in with only a half a tank (to get a higher concentration of cleaner vers fuel). Once in, run it down the highway (the cleaner works best when the engine is hot) until you are almost out of gas, then fill it up and add another bottle of injector cleaner (alway add the injector cleaner after filling as the cleaner will foam if added before and this will lead to gas spillage at the pumps). Run the car normally. If it is just carbon, by you next tank of gas the problem should be solved. As pervention, I recomend using fuel injection cleaner every 4 tank fulls (for most people it works out to about once a month).

no, even if they did bolt up, it would probably not run very well and the check engine would most likely be on...

Ford Escort 1998 fuel pump not working.

good old ford lol, try looking at the crank sensor its located at the front of the engine tucked in right hand side of exhaust manifold and gearbox, two pin plug, i have also known these to have no end of faults with the fusebox.
easy to remove, and solder the connections inside they all suffer eventually, if your not to handy with cars i recommend taking to a auto electrician, easy if you know how. Good luck Davelee

Water pump on escort

If the engines are Zetec DOHC 16v, I would suggest that you source a new water pump for your engine. To change the water pump is not very easy for the average DIY. I would entrust the job to a vehcile technician and get the drive belts changed at the same time as the anti freeze would have contaminated your drive belts.

Engine runs on when driving along

Sounds like the choke is sticking on, that would also explain the heavy fuel consumption

Hi

Try the boot. Thats where they used to put them. Possibly under the spare wheel.

Have a good root around in there.
