96 Ford Exp XLT O/D lite flashes/check engine lite on code 761

The RPMs fluctuated from 2200 to 3100 while driving on the interstate. The O/D lite started flashing @ 65mph and the check engine lite came on. I checked the code and the OBD II gave 1 code - P0761. What can i expect when i get it serviced? Is it in the tranny or somewhere else?

The info was good but that is what i found out by reading my OBD book and what info was on the NET. I needed to know if I could do the repair and where exactly is the malfunction. I'm trying not to give Ford all of my money!

Now that i have an idea where it is, how much should it cost(approx)to be repaired and how long should it take?

Dear Sir/Madam,

The problem indicates that electrical malfunction.

Possible cause:

Internal Transmission
Damaged solenoid
Solenoid circuit open or shorted to power or ground
Power circuit open or shorted
PCM damaged.

There is definitely some electrical diag. that needs to be done. I think it may be an expensive one. Check out dealer if you have warranty or local mechanic.

Thanks
Good Luck

P0761 indicates the third gear shift solenoid has an electrical malfunction. Most likely a bad solenoid.
Shift Solenoid 3 is located inside the transmission on the main valve body.

Code P0761 indicates the third gear shift solenoid has an electrical malfunction. Most likely a bad solenoid. You will definitely need servicing.

Found this on a different forum as well:

"After all this time it was just a broken wire at the base of the shift lever. The wire from the overdrive button (thin black wire) was worn and shorted on the column.

The fuse kept blowing as soon as I put it in gear and this prevented the backup lights from working and then the OD light would flash. Also, pressing the OD button did not turn the 'OD off' indicator light on. Since the truck could not shift into over drive, it triggered the P0761 code code and the CEL stayed on. I had always thought the 3-4 solenoid was bad but really it was just the broken wire.

So if you back up light fuse is blown and you OD light is flashing, don't wait for years to fix it like me. Check the wire at the base of the shift arm and you may find a little electrical tape can save an annoying problem.

I have read posts with similar problems on Explorers so maybe this will help."

Hope that helps! Dont forget to ACCEPT the solution if it helped!

    This diagram should help:

If you can locate it, it should not be too difficult to repair. However, if you are not too experienced in this stuff, best leave it to a mechanic. (Any one should be able to do the job, but you will need to buy the solenoid replacement)

You will have to shop around for prices from 2-3 different mechanics in your area. I couldn't give you a figure.. It should not take more than an hour or two..

TIP - You could try the "Repair Service" box on the left and input your Zip to give you contacts for mechanics in your area. Tell them that you were referred by Fixya, and you just might get a discount :)

I have a 2001 Chevrolet Impala LS 3.8 and it starts and idles fine in park but while driving the rpms aren't where they normally are and fluctuate a lot sometime causing the car to surge or jerk.

Possible ignition misfire causing this problem. Is the check engine light on/flashing? If so, have the codes scanned to help, isolate the problem. Even without the check engine light on, the computer will sometimes store a code that can be helpful in diagnosing this issue

Check Engine light

This is a lean Code. What is happening is too much air is entering the engine and the O2 sensor is making the engine run rich to rebalance the fuel ratio.

You need to find the leak. Use a spray bottle of water while the engine is running. When you spray over the leak, the rpm will change or the engine may even stall. This is where repair is needed.

96 FORD EXPLORER XLT 4X4 LIGHT FLASHING

Does the 4x4 "actually" work because this is a signal that the system has a problem. Its like a check engine light that comes on or flashes when there is a problem with the engine or emission system.
