Open Question

R&R engine, now looking to get all ground straps and elec connech

My husband and a friend took the engine out of our 1998 Windstar (3.8l) and are having trouble remembering where all the connections go. I haven't worked as a wrench in about 12 yrs so am working almost blind. Does anyone know the connect points for all the ground straps on this engine? Please?????

All these systems are controlled by the GEM, that is the Generic Electronic Module, have Kragen run a quick test and see if the system has codes, but most likely the Module is defective, it is located on top of the fuse panel to the left of the steering column. I have 30 years as a Ford tech so I am pretty darn sure of this diagnose.

SOURCE: 1998 WINDSTAR CSERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT IS ON

it's not likely a bad o2 sensor would cause it to run rough, but the catylitic converter, which is what the o2 sensor reads the flow of, would cause the car to idle and run rough. If you take it to an auto parts store to have a diagnostic test ran on it( most major parts stores will do this for free), thecodes it gets would help pin point it alot better.

You probably have lost your ground. Check ground straps going from firewall to engine block. Then follow through and verify at the lights and look for exposed or corroded wires.

Yup, grounding problem.
There is a grounding strap from the engine to the chassis. It is either loose, corroded, damaged, missing, or otherwise not making good contact with the engine or chassis. If you can't locate it, then ground has been using the "pigtail" wire coming off the negative battery side.
If you had the battery or cables services recently, then the wrong negative cable was installed. Installing a ground strap (AutoZone $8) from engine to chassis is better anyway.

Abs light came on and odometer and speedometer stopped working. What can be the cause?

This is one thing that can cause erratic and wierd problems. You have a ground strap that connects the engine to the frame, if that were broken you could lose a ground and erratic electrical things could happen. It's a possibilty. Good luck.

Starter issues with 98 Ford Windstar (3.8)

one problem that the 98 winstars ( 3,8L ) are prone to is the transmission range sensor. they are badly located and not well sealed. As a result corosion...
The starter solenoid wire ( red/ light blue ) runs throught the range sensor before reaching the ignition switch.
Try shifting back and forth between Park and L1 rapedly at least 5, 6 times and then try starting in Neutral.
If it starts the TRS is easy to replace and accesible.
( The TRS is also responsible for the transmission going into irradical kick down mode )

P0171 code, low power, hesitation during acceleration

When in doubt, with ALL Windstar "mystery engine/power train problems, make sure all of the GROUND STRAP connections are clean & tight. Especially the starter ground strap. Sounds silly, but if you've got intermittent "juice" the computer will go out of it's mind and you'll have all kinds of strange results! Surging while driving

DO NOT waste your money on tranny solutions!!! I have a 1998 Ford Windstar. About 2 years ago I started noticing a strange almost shaking, jerking serge type of activity when I would get into the "mid-range" (30-50) on the speedometer. I took it to a very trusted mechanic. After about $2000 and several different "tranny solutions", I thought the problem was fixed until about two week later when it suddenly jerked and sputtered AGAIN!! Don't waste your money on tranny issues. (by the way.. my van has also recently had a new tranny put into it and it STILL HAPPENS)
