Question about 1999 Dodge Ram

1 Answer

Engine won't start

I have a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 with 99,000 miles that started this morning just fine. When I went out this afternoon to start it again it wouldn't. I have just replaced the battery and starter in the last six weeks. The engine makes the noise like it's going to start but it won't fully crank over. I'm wondering if it could be the fuel filter or pump? A friend of mine thought she might've smelled gas. I've never had any problems like this before now.

    It won't start at all.

Does the engine turn over ok, it just doesn't start or does it seem like it is having a tough time turning over at all?

The smell of gas can be either a leak or from turning the vehicle over for an extended period of time, especially if the gas pedal is pumped. You can check for fuel leaks, just look for wet spots. If there are no fuel leaks, the smell of gas is because because gas is being pumped into the engine but not burned. This is called flooding.

Also, a lot of the time the "new" starter that you bought isn't actually a "new" starter, is it a starter that someone else has replaced and the starter was rebuilt. I have had a couple cases where the "new" starter was bad and I have heard of many other cases that were the same.

Let us know and I am sure someone can help further.

Yes, I understand that it does not start. I just want to make sure that I understand correctly. There are 2 things that can happen when you turn the key. Nothing at all, or the engine will make noise but not actually run. I am trying to find out which of the 2 is happening.

Check the plugs to the computer on the passenger side of the firewall. there are three of them, unplug them, wait ten or eleven minutes and plug them back in. if that does not work you might have a computer problem or a bad ground wire at the battery
By the way my 99 has the original plugs, wires, rotor, dist cap, and coil, from the factory. Start up time?

The obvious answer is "as short a time as possible". With that said, I usually allow a couple of minutes for fluids to get moving on warm mornings, but up here in Ontario in winter it gets pretty cold some mornings which requires a little extra for defrosting windows etc. I usually try to get moving as soon as it's safe to do so. Idling wastes fuel, contributes to air pollution, and is not good for an engine. Even if you feel better by going easy on the gas for the first few miles, at least your moving.
