Question about 1987 Ford Mustang

1 Answer

Mustang i read what you wrote to another guy and i think you may be right i just wanted to tell you what my problem is. I have a 87 mustang 5.0 i turned it off and went to restart it, it just makes a kind of machine gun noise and wont turn over. I let it sit for a while came back out and it started after grinding a bit. a guy comes up to me and says sure enough its the solinoid so im thinking yeah it heats up and wont start so i replace it and im still having trouble. im wailing on the starter and it doesnt seem to be making any kind of difference. the engine sounds fine when it starts but trying to crank over sounds like its blown. scared the **** out of me.

Your bushings in your starter are probly worn out. Its a fairly common problem on fords. My own mustang did it often as well. The starter is right near the exhaust manifold so sometimes when it cools down it works again a few times but you will want to get your starter changed out as soon as possible.

Fusible link location

Look for your ecu relay its above your mustangs ecu. Look behind the passengers side scuff plate. Its kinda tough to reach on the 87-93 5.0 Mustangs it may be easier on your 4 banger try to access it by releasing the glove box retainers by squeezing side of box once opened it should pop loose for you. Now look to the right there should be a Classic 80's style ford relay take this relay off replace it also check your fuel pump relay as it may be causing these issues. On my 87 5.0 the fuel pump relay is under the drivers side seat, yours might be in the same spot if not look for the relay located by maf in the engine bay. The relay looks identical to the ecu relay replace this also might as well since you're troubleshooting a car over 20 years old...... I think you can get them for 5-10 bucks at any auto parts place. hope this helps you or another person with the same issue on their stang. Look at picture for what these relays should look like I circled it for you.

What can cause code p0135 on 2004 jeep grand cherokee laredo

one more thing to check after going through all this stuff, which actually these guys seem to have a wealth of knowledge on. seriously. jeep for some reason has a notorious situation that so many mechanics and enthusiasts miss. .. it took me 3 weeks to figure this stupid mess out for my x's daughter, who hates me by the way, but i do it because i'm a nice guy. try the cam sensor. sounds silly i know. but i see it more and more as being the answer to all these mysteriousness ailments to these hard running jeeps. my daughter is getting ready to drive and wouldn't you know it she wants a grand cherokee. lol. I have an 87 yj. but its a weekend mustang killer. and i luv to stomp tuners on the highway. its on youtube. got a lil sbc, with a t-5 borg warner hybrid shorty, 1,2,3, fast throw, 4,5. way long. 4:11 rear with detroits. not 4wd. its so fun. had to put upper and lower lakeside drag bars. but anyway..... :) cam sensor give it a thought. sometimes 1 and 2 banks are hard to differentiate for some reason when reading codes. still trying to figure that one out.???

87 Raider will not turn over

Check down at the starter for 12volts on the ignition lead (thin wire) to see if it has power when the key is in the start position. If so, then its a starter (you can't really change out a solenoid for less than the cost of that starter if its gear reducted, which I think it is). If no signal, then you have a clock spring or ignition switch problem. Your blinkers also run through the ignition switch - FYI - which may present a common failure of 2 or more things on a shared component. Check for the starter voltage from ign switch - it'll tell you all you need to know.

Hope that helps.

87 ranger new motor bad truck

try to find an 1988======>93 ranger. the closer to 88 the better. the wiring harness is similar in 90-93, but you will have to adapt some parts on the newer.

97 5.0 mustang replacing motor mounts

You just have to jack up the engine under the oil pan. Then simply unbolt the mount bolts. Some guys think it is easier if you do one side at a time by jacking one side up at a time. It does make it a bit easier to locate the bolt holes during install.
