Pull the colum covers and check the ignition switch to see if it has come apart.

Voltage is not really the issue here, the amperage is the thing that make things go.
you battery may have 1 or 2A, but hte bettery still reads 12v.
are you getting any gas to the engine.?
try a new battery, and give it a short bust, not a long cranks. and give enough gas in between the bust.

My 1997 ford taurus wont shift out of park. The shifter seams to be stuck, it wont move. The shifter is on the steering wheel not the floor.

This is often a switch located on the brake pedal lever. The car requires you to press the Brake pedal before shiftting out of Park. You lose the signal when a foot hits or breaks this part. Look under the dash for the part and fix it.

1997 ford taurus stuck in park

Is it on a steep incline, if so it will have to be pushed the opposite direction that gravity is pulling on it. ie if headed up hill push from rear. If it is on a level it is probably in the ignition key position that has it locked out. Jiggle the ignition while trying to take it out of park. Also some models requite the brake to be pressed down. Check and see that the switch on the brake that is associated with the transmission selector is not faulty or misaligned. If that fails it will probably have to go into the shop. Hope one of these works, the position of the ignition is one of the worst causes of transmission selector problems across all cars.

Shift lever is hard to get out of park, what is wrong? 1997 taurus

I have the same problem, amoung others. I have to turn key to start position and then back it out until the radio and dash info lights go out, put car into N and then start car. There is a safety thingy that needs to be removed (fixed is better). It keeps the car from being accidently put into gear while not running. Hope this helps. It is only a temporary solution.

From what your saying it starts to over heat at stops, check your radiator cooling fan, sounds like it's not working, could be a fuse or the fan motor it's self.

When this happens, leave the key in the ignition and change from park to neutral and back again. I have to do this on my Taurus SHO from time to time. It won't start because it doesn't think it is in Park. Something to do with the shift selector switch on the transmission.
