Question about 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme

Trans stuck in gear, no speedometer

The 95 cutlass is stuck in 3rd gear, leads to very slow acceleration but the car is fine once up to speed. Also the speedometer jumps around from 0 to 50 mph no matter what speed i am going. Is the trans bad or maybe just a bad speed sensor?

Transmission has to be manually shifted. Downshifts on its own, and i can take off in 1st but only at very slow speed. 2nd and 3rd gear seem fine other than manually shifting.


u need a scan using factory or vehicle specific gear--values of components will be diplayd so an xperiencd tech can decyfr--littl code readers dont du it---w age of car certain sensors etc need replacin-believe that trans is electric controled--dont rplace any parts til uve isolated issue----------also go to magicmechanic online and checout the napa library on that model

Manually shift the gears to see if it does better. Maybee, the ttc solenoid engages early and stalls the engine. Trans.Torque Converter

95' Mercury Sable 3.0w/overdrive auto trans when car reaches operating temp trans will shift fine until it shifts for third or o/d then completely disengages will not reengage until car slows and down...


Sounds like a shift solenoid problem. If you have any codes associated with solenoid failure, that is probably what it is. If there are no codes, it is probably something stuck in the valve body or something else mechanical.

When accelerating through the gears as i drive. I get a vibration when i hit second gear. Then when i hit 3rd gear, it feels like it slips and revs around 3,4k rpm, accelerating really slow. When i hit 4th...


sounds like 3rd gear/clutch is worn.I don't think a service will do any good.But if you remove the pan and find debris you know you will need a trans in the near future.

Transmission is shifting hard and slow to pull on a 95 silouette also makes clucking sounds while accelerating


Shift suddenly become very hard. When going from park to either reverse or drive it slams into gear. 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are also harsh. All gears seems to work. Problem may be intermittent: Check TPS for smooth and linear electrical response over the entire range of motion. If not, replace.

Extremely harsh shifts from P or N, normal shifts at WOT: EPC (Electronic Pressure Control) solenoid failed. Easy fix in pan. Fix as soon as possible or hard parts will eventually break.

No 1st or 4th available; trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter : ShiftA solenoid failed. Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

Car goes into gear but feels very sluggish like the brakes are dragging, but it will roll easily (starts out in 4th gear), you manually shift to 2 to get it moving, once it's moving you put it back in OD and the car shifts 3rd to 4th on its own and locks the converter at the appropriate time: ShiftB solenoid failed: Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

It physically will fit and bolt up,but there are many different ratio,and drive and driven sprocket tooth counts,different final drive ratios,all monitored by the computer with electronic speed sensors.If the trans from the 95 has a different ratio than the 93,the computer will set gear ratio error codes,and possibly put the trans in a failsafe mode,stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear.On the transmission case,down by where the passenger side axle would go in,is a thin metallic tag,maybe 2"x 3",and it has bar codes,and also a series of numbers and letters.The numbers and letters,large cap,are the final drive gear ratio code.They should match on the two transmissions in question.
