Question about 2002 Ford SVT Focus

Speedometer, Radio Volume Intermittently Jump

My daughter's 2002 Ford Focus has developed a problem where the speedometer intermittently jumps all over the place - 0-90 and back, no matter what speed she is driving. The radio volume also intermittently jumps. Weather, speed, and cold start don't seem to make a difference in these incidents which occur sporadically but make it difficult for her to drive, especially commuting to work in 35-mph zones.

These problems developed AFTER she reported a problem with her blower which now only works on HIGH speed. (I suspect that the blower is a faulty relay-COULD THIS ALSO BE CAUSING THE OTHER PROBLEMS???).

She's a starving student and I can't help her out much either. Can anyone suggest what could be causing the speedometer and radio surges and can this be fixed at a reasonable cost? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I appreciate your comments and we will check the register pack and the ground going to the radio and speedometer. The problem is not affected by bumps--jumps in radio volume and speedometer happen even when my daughter isjust sitting in traffic.

I have a very similar problem with my 2003 Ford Focus 1.6L Ghia, In so much as the speedo will suddenly jump to a speed much higher than the car is traveling. The radio volume will also suddenly increase in synchronism ( that is if its turned on).

Generally the fault only lasts for a second or two but may occur three or four times.

Only once so far has it lasted for about 10 seconds.

The car gives no other indication of any other fault.

I know about the problem with the instrument cluster and have taken it apart quite a long time ago, well before this trouble started. Being an electronics engineer I wanted to see if my pcb was showing signs of corrosion (it was, but only very slight). I cleaned the pcb using pcb cleaner and re-lacqured it.

I have not had any problems until now.

I strongly suspect this present problem is caused by a poor earth somewhere.

If any one knows the answer or can throw any light on it I would be extremely grateful.

    Regards,

    Techy.

Ford Focus's have a common problem with the instrument panel in the dashboard. My Speedo intermittently swicthes itself off all together occasionally and then comes back all on its own. I believe its related to the circuit board on the back of the instrument panel corroding over time. As a potential workaround you can take the panel out of the dash and spray the back with WD40, it might not last forever though.

The blower problem is caused by a blower motor resister pack. That resister pack is what causes the blower motor to have more than one speed. The other problems could be related to circuits that also connect to the resister pack or use a common ground but I'm not totally convinced of that. Remember, the speedometer is electricly driven (there is no cable from the transmission to the speedometer on this car). It could also be a faulty ground going to the radio/speedometer. Do the problems seem to happen when you hit a bump?

Much good luck!

This is a result of either a bad solder job at the factory or just bad solder. You can remove your gage cluster and remove and resolder the joints at the back of the 2 indicators. there are several sites on the internet that have specific instructions.

My speedometer quit but the odometer still works (1998 F150) can you solve this

Usually it's the opposite. The speedometer works and the odomater and trip meter go inop. Most likely the speedometer assembly is bad. If the odometer is working you have a signal from the gray and black wire .

Speedometer and air conditioning problems - Ford Focus Saloon

The VSS (vehicle speed sensor) sends the signal that activates the speedometer. Interestingly enough the signal is also sent to the radio to adjust the volume for road noise. That would explain your perception that it is worse when listening to the radio. Now, solving your problem may not be as easy as following the link between these two devices, but I would check the vehicle speed sensor first.
