the complete run down and what ive found so far ///

    "i have a 97 cherokee with a 4.0 that's not getting any spark. i have
replaced the coil and checked to see its getting power (my test light
will light up on both wires leading to the coil when cranking)visually
inspected the cap and rotor and checked injector pulse. all the gauges
work on the dash and the info cluster. all the fuses are good under the
hood and in the vehicle. the fuel pump kicks on fine. any idea's ?? i
was told that if the crank sensor is bad then the check engine light
wont come on until you unplug it from the harness( is this true??)but i
tested it with my volt meter and am getting between 5v and 0.3 v on one
wire and between 3 and 4 volts on the other.i replaced the crank sensor
because it should have 8 volts on that wire but it didn't solve my
problem. so i have also pulled the codes and they are reading 12_54_55.
54 being the crank sensor which is inside the distributor on this model
and year jeep, however before i swap that for a new one i tested the
power to the coil and with my test light grounded i get power on the
green / orange wire. but with my test light swapped to positive I'm
getting no ground pulse on the gray / black wire so could this be the
pcm?? whats its location and how would i check it and whats the best
way to test that 1 wire for breaks besides the wiggle method?? volt
    meter maybe??"

More than likely its your computer that controls the spark to the coil

I would make sure you have voltage to the coil. Could be a fuse or relay problem. Is the check engine light on when you turn the key on ?

My 1994 Jeep grand cherokee won't start. It tries to start but doesn't. Tried replacing cap and rotor and still will not start. When I checked the spark it was yellow. What does that mean?

Yellow means weak spark should be blue check the coil tower where the coil wire attaches on the coil for corrosion. Also check the spark plugs for wear.

MAKE SURE DISTRIBUTOR CAP ,ROTOR, SPARKPLUGS AND WIRES, OKAY IF ALL HAS BEEN REPLACED.IF NOT GETTING SPARK PROBLEM COULD BE IGNITION COIL FAULTY, ASD RELAY FAULTY,DISTRIBUTOR WITH CAMSHAFT SENSOR FAULTY OR YOU HAVE FAULTY PCM. CODE SCAN VECHICLE FOR FAULT CODE, IF YOU ARE GETTING SPARK PROBLEM IN THE FUEL SYSTEM, CHECK FUEL PUMP RELAY AND FUSE MAKE SURE FUEL FILTER BEEN CHANGED AND FUEL PRESSURE IS 39 - 41 PSI. CHECK FOR FUEL SPARK SEE WHAT GOING ON, VECHICLE NEEDS FUEL OR SPARK TO RUN IF ONE NOT WORKING ENGINE WILL NOT START.

First test the coil, Make sure you have power to it? If you do? Inspect the cap and rotor button for damage. If that all checks out? replace crank sensor

Problems starting engine.

If your engine is turning over, but not starting, then the alarm is not the issue. The alarm will keep the vehicle from ever cranking to begin with. I don't believe that jeep used any type of immobilizer system back in 1995, so that should rule that out of the equation. You sound like you have some mechanical aptitude, and at least you know that it's missing spark, and where it's missing it at. Your next step would be to find a wiring diagram of your vehicle, and sorta trace the current flow backwards and find out exactly you're losing it at. Chances are it's something stupid simple, but you're just gonna have to do a little current tracing and check each connector, relay, fuse, etc along the way with anything involved in that circuit.
