To find out if the key is bad go to local lock smith and ask for a code key from the vin number they will tell you you need a chip that is correct but the key will open the door and turn on the ignition. if the new key works then your key is bad and the dealer can make you one for about 100.00 dollars if it still dont turn then the key cylinder is bad and it will need to be replaced good luck

I have a 2006 Mercury Mountaineer . I was driving and all dashboard lights came on and made a beeping sound so I turned it off and It will not start. Is this a major fix? Computer switched twice.

Who switched the computer ? Where they programmed ? All dash board lights came on because vehicle engine stopped running ! Will not start how ? When you turn the ignition key to start position does any thing happen ? What I'm getting at here is it a no crank - no start or a engine cranks - no start . Big difference in diagnostic trouble shooting . As far as how much it would cost and is it a major fix ,nobody can say for sure .

How to program new keys after replacing the ignition on 2004 mercury mountaineer

Sorry , but it is a dealer item or a locksmith( call and make sure they can do it first). It can be done though. You have to remove the tumblers from the old lock set, so any ford key will turn it. Insert the original key in, for so many seconds, I believe 30. Pull it out and insert the new key. for 10 seconds. Then put in the new lock set and it should start. You get up to 8 keys to do this. After that it is a computer reset. I have the computer to reset them, so it has been a while since i did the lock set relearn.

Where they slide in at the top of the seat there should be a release button on each side. Press and pull at the same time and they should pull out. Then just push them back in

Sounds like the battery is dead, you have just enough power to have the lights come on, but no cranking of the starter. Try putting the battery on a trickle charger, or hook up jumper cables to another car which is running. Let it run with the jumper cables connected for two mintues before you try and start your car.
