My truck was fine and i went to pick my daughter up and parked came out and BAMB stuck in park. This is what i did. I placed in in 4 wheel drive and gave it a little gas, this put it into drive. I had someone follow me home. On the way home it made a quick **** a noise and I haven't had the problem since. It was like it just wasn't sure and I just had to show it who was the boss. Love my truck, I am however noticing the recalls do seem to be a lot. Cin

My truck will not shift out of park about half the time. We have discovered we can push in the little lock mechanism with a screw driver after the ignition is on and that is a good temporary fix. I am guessing cleaning and lubing the part will fix the issue as that is what worked with the ignition earlier this winter when it kept getting stuck.

I had the same problem (will not shift out of park) with my 03 Durango with column shifter, worked on it and found the issue to be a pin that comes out in the steering column to block the shifter when the truck is turned off in park. When you turn the truck back on the motion of the key switch is supposed to allow the pin to retract so you can shift. In cold weather mine acts up. It looks like the pin is retracted with a spring and there may be some grease in the system that hangs the pin up in cold weather. Cleaning the parts may be a fix but to get mine working I pulled the boot that surrounds the shifter lever out of place and then the pin can be seen. A push on the pin with the key on and it retracted so I could shift. I think I will just leave the boot out until it warms up and I can try some presserized oil free cleaner on the parts.

I have a Durango of the same year. The problem is the shift cable. It will bind from time to time. Like any cable of that sort, the inside relies on lubrication, although it can not be lubricated, it comes lubed up from the factory. Early into the problem, it will free up when the vehicle warms up, because the lubricant loosens up.
In short, if you replace the shift cable your problem will be solved.

it is your interlock solenoid or switch on your brake pedal. This keeps you from starting your car in anything but park.

Will not shift out of park

Usually a faulty brake switch or shift lock solenoid. You may be able to get the trans out of park by moving the shifter after you unlock the ignition but before you turn the switch to the on position.

Put your foot on the brakes and have someone see if you have brake lights. This has a shift interlock that uses the brake lights to complete the circuit that unlocks the shifter from park. You can bypass this saftey feature by applying brake, engine off key off and moving shifter to neutral then starting the engine Dont forget to fix your brake lights !!

Gear shift is stuck in park I have a similar problem. I have a 2004 dodge durango. It will start up fine, but it won't shift into reverse or drive. It usually takes up to 15 minutes sometimes to get it...

there is a release on the brake pedal that lets the transmission shift out of park you should hear it click when you put your foot on the brake

Not sure that this is the solution, but I found a work around on my Durango. If you take off the cover on the shifter there is a lever (button) that you can dislodge and the vehicle will release out of park. After I did this a couple of times, I haven't had the issue happen again.
