Question about 2002 Dodge Durango
2002 DODGE DURANGO. WILL NOT SHIFT OUT OF PARK
I had the same problem (will not shift out of park) with my 03 Durango with column shifter, worked on it and found the issue to be a pin that comes out in the steering column to block the shifter when the truck is turned off in park. When you turn the truck back on the motion of the key switch is supposed to allow the pin to retract so you can shift. In cold weather mine acts up. It looks like the pin is retracted with a spring and there may be some grease in the system that hangs the pin up in cold weather. Cleaning the parts may be a fix but to get mine working I pulled the boot that surrounds the shifter lever out of place and then the pin can be seen. A push on the pin with the key on and it retracted so I could shift. I think I will just leave the boot out until it warms up and I can try some presserized oil free cleaner on the parts.

I have a Durango of the same year. The problem is the shift cable. It will bind from time to time. Like any cable of that sort, the inside relies on lubrication, although it can not be lubricated, it comes lubed up from the factory. Early into the problem, it will free up when the vehicle warms up, because the lubricant loosens up.
In short, if you replace the shift cable your problem will be solved.
