2002 Grand Am Security problem

I have a 2002 Grand Am Pontiac.  We replaced the battery and had a problem with the security reset.  Had to leave the ignition on for 15 minutes then it started.  Yesterday the car would not start.  Checked the battery, starter all OK left the ignition on for 15 min.  still would not start.  Had it towed to the mechanic and it started at the mechanics business.  While I tried to start it at home I noticed the security light was on and would not go off  How can I disarm the security.  My wife is scared to drive for fear of getting stranded.  Thanks

I have been having the same problem, however if I leave the ignition on for 11 minutes or more, it starts every time.  My began after getting automatic window parts replaced.  Someone had told be that the garage that fixed it probably didn't reset the security system after fixing the window.  When I called the garage and asked about it, they were like "yeah bring it in and we'll reset it."  Well, it's been about 2 weeks, and with my husband and I both working, we haven't been able to get the car into the shop.  Now, we called to make an appointment, and they're saying it has nothing to do with resetting the system, and that it's all in the ignition, something about the ignition getting messed up with dangling keys or not turning it over smoothly.  HMMMMM....seems pretty suspicious to me that weeks ago they were all about fixing it for free, and now it's going to cost us.  The mechanic is calling with a quote sometime today, so I'll post it when I hear.

Where's fuse for security system in 2003. Pontiac grand am

Is your security light blinking , if so the car won't start . If this is what your car is doing you need to maintain good charge to battery . Put key in ignition then turn to run position , not the crank position leave for ten minutes then turn key off and do the same thing two more times . It takes 30 minutes to reset security , after the third time turn key off take key out . Then put key back in ignition and if you followed everything I said it should reset the security. If it is a security issue a code will be stored. Until you check that a code is not stored then all suggestions will be a waste of time.
You really need a diagnostic scanner hooked up to see whats going on.

2002 grand am won't start security problem

If the security light is on then place the key in the on position and leave it for about 10 minutes. When the security light starts blinking then press the brake pedal while the key is still in the on position. Then it should start. My 2002 was doing that for awhile and i would have to reset it about once a week or so.

Starts and runs 3-5 seconds and shuts down

Sounds like your security system is shutting the car down. You should be able to leave the key on for 15 minutes and it will reset itself. Make sure you are using factory keys, and they are in good condition.

Notice if your SECURITY dashboard light is on when the key has been turned to the on position. If it is then your security feature needs to be reset.
The security feature will often come on when 2 failed attempts to start the car have occured or the battery goes dead or is replaced.
I believe to reset the security feature you have to place the key in the ignition and turn to the on position without starting the car and leaving it there for 10 minutes. Just wait it out and the light will go out. Then take the key out and try restarting.
I've been through this many times. You need a good battery to leave the key on for 10 minutes.
Take it easy!

My 2002 pontaic grand amm wont start

I had this problem with my 2002 grand am. I had a problem with the security system. I had to turn the key forward for 10 minutes until the system reset. When it was reset...the security light would stop blinking on the dash. Then you can turn the key back and try to start it. Hope this helps. I had to take my car to the shop and have something replaced ( can't remember exactly what it was..maybe ignition switch).

Check the ignition switch by turning the key to the "on" position and check to see if all your dash lights come on. Check your ground wires at the battery and the condition of the cable ends.
