You could need to bleed the system of air. you should add coolant to the overflow bottle after you fill up the radiator and then let the car run until it gets warm enough to open the thermostat when your cooling system needs to bleed air and take in water it should let air out into the overflow bottle and take in coolant

2000 Gallant. Installed new radiator, thermostat, and water pump. Why does temp gauge read hot when it's not?

Disconnect the temperature sending unit wire connector for the gague ( not the one for the computer ) with the key on. The temp hand should stay on cold mark. Next, ground the wire and the temp hand should go to full hot indicating the gague and wiring to it are ok. If ok suspect a faulty temp sending sensor if the cooling system is full and properly bled

Temperature gauge goes up down

this could be a clogged radiator or heater core, either way have your coolant system back flushed.

Got a coolant temperature problem. No leaks found. since having a new radiator by previous owner it used to lose small amount of coolant everyday, but couldn't locate problem. Now i have a new problem...

Hi Bananaman,

In the middle and late 1990"s BMW used water pumps with plastic impellars. When the vehicle would overheat or age, the impellar would come loose and create a overheating condition. I would definitely recommend removing and inspecting the water pump. Just in case the pump is ok, you can reinstall it. Make sure to replace the o-ring on the pump. Its only about $3.00.good luck.

When you take your foot off the gas the temperature gauge goes up. We already changed the thermostat and the water pump. What else could it be?

Water pump does not sound like it because if the temp goes down when gas is applied that means water pump is pumping. but good to eliminate it none the less.
Possible cause
Clogged radiator
try to flush the radiator both ways
restriction inside the block

Temperature gauge goes up all of the sudden

It sounds like you have air in the Cooling system and the bars leak permanent seal does not help. The sealer creates restrictions through out the water jackets and can cause the thermostat to stick. Replace the radiator cap and run the truck with the radiator cap on the first click and keep an eye on the over flow tank, refill the over flow as needed and make sure you have the heater on the highest setting to work out all the air in the system. Once all the air has worked it's way out of the system, then you can close the radiator cap to the second click to ensure full pressure is built up in your cooling system. Good luck and keep me posted.

99 cadillac seville continues to overheat even though i put a new water pump

maybe the water pump wasnt the problem to begin with. if the engine temperature only goes up when you stop the car then most likely it is the FANS that are not engaging to cool the radiator which is a problem with the fan sensor, computer that controls the fans, relay/fuse. I had the same problem on my 1999 cady STS coming back from my vacation. the engine temperature would be normal only when I drove the car above 70km/hr because the air passing through the front of the car would cool the radiator. when I slowed down the fans wouldnt start and no air was passing through to cool the rad, hence the engine temperature would start to go to HOT. good luck.

How to remove the thermostat

Remove cap radiator when cold
Drain radiator well below thermostat level.
Disconnect rubberhose from thermostat housing to radiator. Do this at radiator side first cautious to prevent blocked fluid to run over engine . Undo radiator housing cover. Be sure to have new spare gasket. And right type new thermostat with corresponding temperature opening rating.
Take out thermostat. Put new one in in the good position not reversed down (it opens at temperaturing pupping upwards. Check for presence of de-airation hole with little valve.
Put gasket and cover . Tighten the bolts without killing them. Fill radiator to level. Leave a while do de-air leveling over that little hole valve in thermostat I mentioned. I necessarry fill again.

Whilst doing this job be sure the seizure of old thermostat was not due to broken down cooling pump, broken radior fan with activating switch on engine block. At times they go together.

Don't fill with pure water unless for backflushing system. Otherwise vapor bellows in th system will crack the engine block. Some hotspots exceed water vapor point!!

Toyota estima 2.2 td 1992 water temperature high

I had same problem, but when I got to top of hill and sat idle for a bit, it would kick down ? replaced thermostat and still happened until I dumped radiator fix for temperature problems, overheating and such and has not happened since, no problems but even when I know the engine has to be overworked and should show hot, it never goes past middle. I'm not sure of name of liquid, got it from a car dealer, but it is basic about $18.
