My 96 jeep grand cherokee will be driving great and then the rpm needle will drop and you lose power sometimes it dies and sometimes if your pumping the gas it will back fire and then start driving great again. And sometimes it will die at stop signs and lights. And sometimes it will drive fine for days and not do anything. We have changed so many parts and it still does it... HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!!

Have you checked your Vacuum lines? See below for the Diagram for a 96 Grand Cherokee. If they are good (and the accessories are new/good) you may have some throttle body issues.

Sounds to me like the PCM Problem that is common with these vehicles; check out jeep grand cherokee PCM fix on google & you will see what i mean, the simplest solution is to get a new or gauranteed good PCM & fit it then back the screws off quarter inch & this should solve your problem for good. good luck from paul in England

SOURCE: my car starts and then dies

sounds like a security issue they installed a factory security system which will prevent the vehicle from running unless its reset go to passenger door lock turn key twice it worked for me after chasing other problems for a few hours

SOURCE: 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Died while driving home

check the fuel pump fuse/relay, could be just bad enough to cause an intermittent start/no start. and check fuel pressure, spark and the crank position sensor.

SOURCE: Car dies at random moments

I just had this problem and replaced the camshaft sensor, crankshaft sensor, and coolant temp sensor. i replaced these items because of high mileage. try these but first check your relays located under the hood on the passenger side. sometimes they get hot and fail.

The first thing to do to save money when the engine stops performing is to run the fault codes. I suggesting that if you do you will find a fault with the canister purge valve /solenoid that is preventing the fuel getting to the injectors.

It sounds like a partially blocked Jet or sounds like a dirty needle and Seat above the fuel bowl in the carburetor you will have to take the top plate off the carby remove the float pin and the needle will drop down there may be a bit of **** caught there once that is cleared it should run well. with the bonnet open start the car look in the small window on the carburetor u will see fuel in there if the fuel drops n doesnt refill rapidly it will be a blocked needle

I have a 1997 jeep cherokee that turns off while i am driving

This is beginning to look like a pervasive problem not unique to your vehicle. It would be interesting to learn exactly what failed inside the pumps you changed. I don't have any good answers yet but I would make a direct ground connection from the battery to the pump harness to eliminate any possibility of overheating of the pump motor from a poor ground, and see if it helps any. Also check all pump connections before you install it.
