Question about Ford Explorer

1 Answer

I have a Ford Explorer 4 wheel drive. It starts making a noise that sounds like a vacuum cleaner when the car is decellerating and if I hit the gas pedal it stops momentarily. My car is automatic and when I put it in park it will not be in park...my car will roll forward only. sometimes it will not go into reverse...it makes the vacuum cleaner sound.

Sounds like you have a vacuum hose leak some where and you need to check all hoses for cracks or holes

My 99 ford explorer won't start unless I hold the gas down I can drive it but as soon as I take my foot off the gas it dies

I would check to see if the intake gaskets are leaking, Especially the upper or plenum gaskets.

Banging noise when you drive

This is a hard problem to describe, I know, and I will toss out a few possibilities. If the noise occurs when the car is accelerating, it can be motor mounts, or carriage mounts on front-wheel drive vehicles. Transmissions can bang into gear. Drive shaft u-joints can bang before they fail. C-V joints in front wheel or 4 wheel drive units can bang when worn out.

The exhaust system can break loose and bang on the frame. Brake calipers can rock in their mounts and transmit sound. Tie-rod ends can make a knocking noise on every bump you hit. There were recalls on gas tank straps for some Ford made units, so a loose gas tank can bang.

1995 Ford Explorer 4 wheel drive trouble, front wheel drive doesn't work

Something you can do is to tap the 4/4 motor under drivers side on the back of transfer case with key on engine off. Have someone work the buttons as you gently tap the motor. Don't hit so hard as to dent it. Usually works.

It sounds to me like you have a big vacum leak in the intake or injection port. You can spray starting flud or carb cleaner around everything while its running when it speeds up you found the leak. You must be un pluging the map sensor vacum.

Sounds like your front axle is trying to engage but does not engage fully.check your vacuum going to the t-case switch and then if that is ok check your vacuum at the front axle actuator. It is located under the battery tray.

My 97 4wd explorer shakes and makes a clunking noise when I get above 50 mph I've replaced both front wheel bearings and did fine for about a month then started shaking and grabing on the driver side only....

It is usually the CV joints in the drive shaft(s) that are worn, and make this noise.
I would look at your CV joint boots, are they dirty and full of grease on the outside. Does the inner wheel well have grease slung onto it ?
Replacing the drive shaft is a difficult repair. I would have a reliable auto repair center give an estimate.
Please let me know what you find.
