Question about 2000 Hyundai Sonata

Car stalls out

I have 2000 sonata w/ 114k miles. this problem just happened so i don't know if it is heat related or not. the car was running fine, then just cut off as if someone turned the ignition off. when the car stalled, all the interior dash board idiot lights went on like it does when you first turn the ignition. if the car sits for a minute, you can restart it but only for about 30 seconds. i let it sit for approximately 10 minutes and started it again. it ran for about 3-4 minutes then went back to just running for 20 seconds. when i went under the hood, just before it conks out, i hear like relays clicking on the left side firewall. while it's running for those 20-30 seconds, i can rev the engine ok, but once i hear the relays, it dies.
any suggestions where i might start looking?

My 2005 Town & Country (3.3L Engine) 114K miles is acting strange. I often have difficulty keeping the engine running. For example the ignition key turns just fine but doesn't sustain the engine on...

New air cleaner needed? That's the simple, cheap fix. Happened to my wife's Volvo once. Thought the EFI was toast and the air cleaner was caked with gunk. Maybe dirty injectors. Try some fuel additive to clean them.

If it is the EFI system, maybe something simple like idle control valve (happened on my newish Subaru), or one of the other sensors: TPS, O2, MAP/MAF, etc. It simply sounds like it is running too lean or rich at idle. Injectors could be bad too. Sounds like you need a different mechanic.

This happens rarely but especially in hot weather you can get an Air bubble in the fuel line that will cause your car to stall out due to fuel starvation. This is normally resolve itself when you switch the engine off and on thus causing the fuel pump to prime itself again.

Runs good for about a 200 mile week trek then

Others may not agree, It sounds to me like it could be a clogged catalytic converter. The converter may be overheating if it's clogged compounding the fact that metal expands when heated. Let it run for awhile at night and see if there's any glowing under the truck. Also check for tell tale signs of heat around the converter. Does the passenger's side floor get very warm to the touch? I may be oversimplifying it but I've seen it happen often.

2004 Sonata almost stalling and check engine light is on

Cleaning the fuel line was a good idea although it will need time to take effect. Another related problem could be clogged or stuck fuel injectors. Another thing to do is pull the spark plugs. Old or dirty spark plugs also contribute to engine sluggishness. Lastly, bring the car to an autoparts store that features free diagnostic tests. If there are any error codes stored on the car's computer, it would give you an idea where to look for any electrical problems.

When I pump gas into my 2000 Hyundai Sonata my car stalls with start up. If I keep my foot on gas for a few seconds it's fine. I had the fuel filter replaced and added gas treatments the stalling problem...

It is possible that when fueling, the fuel is aerated and the pump pulls agitated fuel into the system. you can thry this, fuel up as normal, but wait five or more minutes before starting. see what happens. good luck

Burns through 1 quart of oil every 2000 miles.

After checking out alot of Honda/Acura forums I'm finding that many owners experience the same problem you are having. The best explanation I found was at 2carpros:
From what I'm reading, only way to stop the oil loss is a new engine. If your car is running fine, I'd hesitate to change anything with the engine and stock up on oil.

I have a 2000 Sonata V6 with the same issue (low speed intermittent stalling). Finally found a Hyundai dealer that knew about the issue and replaced the CRANK SENSOR. This has dramatically reduced the stalling but it still occurs very rarely. I think the engine idle speed of my car is abnormally low and this may be a secondary issue not completely related.
