Question about 1985 BMW 3 Series

1 Answer

1985 BMW 325e will not start

When I turn the key in the ignition, I hear a loud clicking sound coming from the vacinity of the driver's side engine compartment. Listening, it sounds as though it is eminating from beneath the brake master cylinder. It has always been sluggish in cold weather. Apart from the clicking sound, there is nothing else to note except that the engine doesn't start. Any suggestions would be gratefully accepted.

    Hi Loringh:

Thanks for the suggestion. I had a problem two weeks ago where the car wouldn't start. I assumed the battery was dead and boosted it and it eventually started. I ran it for the day and put it back into storage until today. I had assumed at that time it was the battery, but you've given me pause to think otherwise. I will try as you suggested and let you know if that works.

    Thanks again - Steve

Rcaf arrow: The clicking sound id probably your starter solenoid. Tis solenoid is actually a relay that connects your starter to the battery so the starter can turn the engine over to get it started.
Try knocking the starter with a hammer, (not real hard, just kinda medium) and see if that makes a difference  I suspect your starter is going bad.
Any indication of prior problems with starting?????

The starter won't crank. If nothing happens when you turn the ignition key to the "Start" position, it means that the starter motor doesn't turn over the engine. Most commonly this could be caused by a dead battery; here is How to check the battery. ... The starter motor itself or a starter solenoid could be bad.13 Aug 2013

Ran out of gas 325e bmw turns over great but won't start

replace fuel pump. you never run out of gas in a BMW...what's wrong with you? It breaks the fuel pump. It's against the BMW code to sit there on the side of the road waiting for bubba and his towtruck and red can of gas. BMW.....come on. you're supposed to have enough money to buy gas. Anyway, the penalty for going against the bmw code of looking like Jed Clampett on the side of the road for gas is: A broken fuel pump.

My Dodge 1985 d150 won't start. New starte,

if you hear a loud click from starter it could be the motor contacts in the starter have gone bad. you will have to remove starter and have it repaired or replaced. check again to make sure that the battery is charged up on truck. also check for a loose ground wire to starter or engine block.

Sounds like a Temperature sensor is malfunctioning, or maybe the o2 sensor/lambda sensor. get a multimeter and check the sensors around the engine for open circuits.
Its most likely (from exp) that it is a Temp Sensor.
There are two heat sensors, one for drivers information (connected to the dashboard) and one to tell the ECU what settings to run the engine with.
Its not the fuel pump.
That would result in fuel starvation.
This soulnds like the ecu is trying to compensate for a crazy value given by the temp sender.

My 325E BMW is not starting

check to see if the raised pin on the fly wheel has has broke off. to do that you, take out the position sensor on the bell housing & look on the flywheel to see if it is there. your have to manually turn the engine whale somebody else looks to see if the pin is still there. if it is not. where it is suppose to be, just put a sheet metal screw in its place. by taking a long drill bit and drilling it out to put the screw. try and see if that's the problem
