Basically I push on the gas and a little trickles through then it surges and my RPMS shoot through the roof! Vaacum seals are fine as I just replaced them all. It Idles ok has a tendancy to fluctuate after a while but I don;t think this is related as this would most likely be timing? Any thoughts besides mass replacement of Fuel distrib, Pressure reg etc??

Sounds like your fuel pump starting to die. It is not getting enough gas under heavy acceleration which is 100% fuel pump slowly dying. At start up it might not be building up enough fuel pressure to feed the system but the shot of ether and engine cranking helps pressure the system just enough for the fuel pump to trickle the gas and run the engine at low rpms.
check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail. you will see a small black cap like you find on a tire. unscrew it and you should see a pin in the middle and the valve will look exactly like the valve on a tire where you put air in. take a small nail or key or something and gently push the pin down while the key is in the on postion.BE CAREFUL AS GAS WILL SHOOT OUT OF THE VALVE!! Make sure you listen close if air comes out with the gas.Keep holding pin down til all air is out and only gas is shooting out. this should solve your problem if not try again and if you have more air in fuel line then you have a leak in fuel line
i have a 2001 chevy z-71 5.3L. I keep getting a random/multiple misfire code for cylinder 1 . I have replaced plugs, wires, coil pack(only on #1 cylinder)., and fuel pump. I still keep getting the cylinder 1 misfire code. I put truck on a scanner and watched the cylinders. # 1 misfires at idle but quickly stops misfiring at around 1000 rpms. you can here the engine miss at idle but truck runs great on road . anyone else ever had this problem?
