Question about 2004 Nissan XTerra

1 Answer

A rattling noise

It sounds like a vibrating type rattling noise and it is underneath. It only does it on small bumps. I first thought it was under the driver's seat but after listening closely it is under the truck itself. More towards the front than the back. It is a 2004 Nissan XTerra 2WD. This is driving me crazy! I believe it started a few months ago. I bought it used from Joe Myers Toyota and it did not do this when I first bought it in May of 2008. It is now Nov. 2008.

i had the same problem. It is a casing to protect you from heat from the exhaust. since i am rarely under my truck, i just removed it. it is aluminum and easy to cut away, and serves no other purpose. but ut makes your xterra sound like its suppose to.

I've been having the same annoying problem!! Matalic squeaks and rattles from the skid plate when I go over bumps. My first was a 2000 Special Edition, now I have a 2005 that I bought used from Toyota and both rattled/squeaked. I just picked it up last week from the Toyota Service Ctr and they installed foam insulation at the fasteners on the skid plate. For the most part, it took care of the problem, but I can still hear the rattling when I go over bumps. Anyone know if Nissan put a service call out for this problem?

Does it come and go when you rev the engine?

If it is only when you are going over bumps it could be a couple of different things. Check the sway arm mounts where they bolt to the frame. These are behind the front skid plate.

I had rattling noises as well (over bumps and when I reved the engine) and it turned out to be the heat shields under the car. I took out 2 heat shields covering the two cats on both sides AND two rusted out dangling rings hanging from the exhaust coupler (have NO clue what they were for)..This has TOTALLY gotten rid of the rattling noise. Good luck!

Yeah, this is common with Xterras and Frontiers. The heat shields that wrap the exhaust lines rust and rattle. I just took them off. No more rattles!

Our 2003 kia spectra has a metalic rattle when you drive over uneven pavement or speed bumps. we ckeck suspension brakes wheel bearings shocks exshaust what is it

The heat shields that are positioned between the exhaust pipe and floorboard or between the exhaust pipe and sensitive electrical components are made of very cheap, thin, tin-like metal. When they rust on one side, one of the tabs comes loose and the whole shield will vibrate especially when accelerating. Since you are getting the noise when you hit a bump, you might check the area where you stow the spare tire (loose tools may be vibrating against the metal). Also the plastic protective pieces behind front bumper sometimes tear and will "flap' against the car and sound like a metallic vibration when you hit a bump especially if you were stuck in snow recently. Look for loose plastic pieces.

Rattling under car -- especially when steerling wheell is turned both ways while parked, in reverse or forward or netural . bmw 230 series

while driving at higher speeds you may not notice a sound as much as when you are drivng in reverse as you usually drive slower in reverse. This leads me to think that the rattling can be caused by a loose protective plate under the car. When a load is put on the engine, it tends to vibrate more this vibration can cause a lose plate to rattle more. This is the cheap answer. That is if you are definitely sure the sound is coming from under the vehicle. Otherwise, you may have a crank shaft problem or a seal in the bottom half of the motor could be bad. You may want to crawl under the car and try to shake some of those plates underneath. If none of them are loose take the car to BMW it shouldn't cast anything for them to look at it unless they have to hook it up to the computer.
Please remember that if you intend to climb crawl under your car, you must make sure that your car is properly supported to prevent serious injury. Also, if your driving with a loose plate, it could easily fly off while driving or if you hit a bump. This could cause serious damage to your vehicle. Also, please check you oil levels and make sure you do not have an oil pressure light coming on when you hear this noise.

Rattling Coming from Engine At low RPM (stopped) and when accl.

If this sounds like a tin can rattle it is likely a loose heat shield on top of the catalytic converter. They come loose after time and corrosion take their toll.

Clicking, squeaking noise and rough-idle when parked in drive

It almost sounds like you have a heat shield that is loose on your exhaust system. Let it cool, and try to reach under, lightly bumping the exhaust pipes with your hand. If you hear any rattle noises, or squeeks then you have a loose shield. you can ither remove the shield, or try to use a large clamp to go around it and tighten it up.
