Question about 1996 Nissan Maxima

Metal to metal klanking noise in the right front wheelwell area

I was told it was the control arm bushing. I was told that the whole arm has to be replaced, that the bushing alone cannot be replaced. Is this true.

That is true as far as a Genuine Nissan replacement part is concerned. The bushings are not serviceable through Nissan. You may be able to find them at an aftermarket parts store (ie. Napa, Advanced Auto, etc). If you don't have the tools to push the old bushing out and the new one in, the arm may be the best way to go (and the easiest). Just remember to have the car aligned after replacement to ensure proper tire wear.

Hope this is helpful!

How do i fix it

Sway bar bushing, Ball joints and Strut Mounts make these noises. See if the ball joint have grease fittings then get them greased. Check if Control arm bushings have play and can they be pumped with grease. If Control arm bushings have play then change the complete Control arm which will be economical in the long run. Please check and get back to me with more information.

Hyundai squeak noise in front right wheel when I drive over speed bumps

It's the upper control arm bushings. Had the same problem. You can get the whole control arm for about $30 and up. Looks like a wishbone and the rubber bushings work themselves loose and rub on the frame.

I have a rattle in the driver's side front while going over slight bumps and/or rough surfaced roads. Not big bumps. Have had it to 2 dealers and they can't find anything. No one feels it while driving...

Been there done that with all front end noises on my Trailblazer. Took me 6 years to figure it out myself and had been into the dealer several times. If it's a rattle noise, like metal to metal, it's your sway bar end links, replace them with Moog brand ($37 each) as these are greasable unlike the stock ones. Boy if you live near Sacramento, I'll look at it for you. There are other noises that I can diagnose by hearing them. A squeaking noise is usually the hood stops and lock, grease them up. A crunching spring noise would be either be your upper or lower A-Arm bushings or your swaybar bushings.

The only real expensive thing here to replace out of all these is the lower A-arm bushings. They are not removable, must buy the whole bracket with the bushings installed...about $120 or less. The way to isolate the squeak is to spray some silicone lube on one bushing at a time.

Would the control arm bushings make a metal to metal noise . lot of play in those bushings.dont know if the problem is the bushings or ball joints?

If you see a lot of side play in the control arm bushings, replace them.
Even if they aren't the source of the noise you hear, they are very important and should not be ignored. While you are doing that work, it will give you an opportunity to get a good look at the ball joints. If they are rusted under the rubber boots or have excessive play, change those as well. (also look at the brakes and other steering components,,,, they all have a job to do and keep your vehicle safe on the road).
One thing...If the bushings and joints both are bad, you could consider getting a complete control arm from a scrapyard. Cheaper and easier to install.

Lower Control Arm Bushing replacement

Hi,
I just did this job on my 98 regal, and I own the service manuals also. The lower control arm bushing that usually goes, is the front one. The rear one doesn't usually go, it is horizontally mounted. The front one for some reason is vertical. The control arm must be removed, and put in a vise. The front bushings outer metal sleeve, must be driven out with a chisel. It comes out easily. The new bushing can be tapped in with a hammer. Hope this helps!

2004 Nissan Quest front control arm bushing replacement.

Sorry guys not a solution but I too have an 04 Quest, which supposedly has worn controller arm bushings and Nissan says I need both controller arms replaced. For a total of $950!!! I was told that they need to replace the whole arm and cannot replace only the bushings. Now reading the posts on this site I find that to be untrue. Seems all I need to spend is anywhere from $25 to $35 per bushing.

Nissan Suspension noise

sounds to me like your front control arm bushings are broken. have your mechanic check the bushings in rear of the control arm. the ones that are right by the 3 bolts in the control arm in rear. those bushings brake and cause play in the whole assembly, causing a rattle. Its a black round bushing about 2 inches in diamater. its most likely all separated. common problem. Have him look at your stabilizer bar links also.
