Has a tention pully holding on the belt.. the pully will have a single bolt head ing the center.. its on a piviting arm thats spring loaded.. get a wrench or ratchet on the bolt in the middle of the pully and push or pull it till it releaves the stress on the belt..

Belt loose to altenator

Loosen the bolt on the upper bracket at the top of the alternator. Pry with a piece of wood to pull the alt over until there is 1/4in deflection on the belt. If the belt is still too loose after you reach the end of the bracket, you will have to but a slightly smaller belt.

Change alternator belt on 1996 buick riviera

The 96 Riviera has a motor mount that interferes with the removal and replacement of the serpentine belt. The motor mount must be loosened and the engine need to be lifted slightly to accomplish the replacement. Not good engineering on this model year.

Alternator

Disconnect battery, disconnect altenator wire harness. Remove bolts and pull out altenator. When reinstalling new altenator, there should be an adjustable pulley called tensioner pulley that will either have to be pulled up or pushed down in order to put belt back on.

HI,FIRST OFF THIS IS A SIMPLE FIX,IF YA JUST DON'T LET THE THING SCARE YA.THERE IS A DIAGRAM ON THE ENGINGE SIDE OF THE HOOD ALSO TO HELP YA REMEMBER I ALWAYS MAKE MY OWN ,HOPEFULY YOUR NOT AS THICK HEADED AS I AM.HEHEHE!FIND THE BELT TENSIONER IT WILL BE SHINY.WITH THE HAND PUSH ON IT SHOULD MOVE UP AND DOWN JUST A LITTLE.YOU SHOULD SEE A BOLT HEAD IN THE CENTER OF THE WEEL/PULLY .WITH THE CORRECT SIZE WRENCH OR SCOKET PUSH DOWN ON TOOL THE BELT WILL LOOSEN UP ENOUGH TO REMOVE.REINSTALL NEW BELT MAKING SURE THE BELT IS ON ALL PULLIES AND THEN REMOVE PRESSURE FROM WRENCH THE BELT SHOULD BE ON ALL PULLIES AND TIGHT START THE ENGINE AND CHECK THAT THE BELT IS TURNING ALL YOUR PULLIES AND THEN TURN OFF ENGINE CHECK YOUR GREAT WORK YOU SHOULD HAVE ALL PULLIES TOUCHING THE BELT AND THE BELT TENSIONER KEEPS THE BELT TIGHT ,NO ADJUSTMENT NEEDED.I HOPE THIS WORKED FOR YA ,IF NOT REDO THE JOB YA WILL QUICKLY SEE WHAT YA NEED TO DO THE NEXT TIME IT'S JUST THAT EASY .

It's actually super easy.
All you need is your year and make alternator belt and a wrench.
Take off the existing altenator, take off the old belt.
Once the altenator is off you'll be able to look further down below where the altenator was. You'll see a metal wheel that's a little bigger than the one on the altenator. This is where the new belt needs to wrap around.
I found it alot easier to wrap the belts around the two wheels before putting the altenator back on the engine.
Make sure that all bolts and seals are sound. (that's the last thing you need falling off in the middle of nowhere!)
Hope it helped!
