Is this an amber colored indicator light in the dash that is on? If so it is not solely a gas cap light it is a check engine light, leaving the gas cap loose is just one of about 100 problems that will turn on the CEL/MIL

After changing the gas cap cause the check engine light was on. The gas cap is sometimes really hard to get off and the check engine light is still on. What could be the problem any suggestions?

Make sure that the gas cap have a rubber gasket in it if it has accidentaly dropped off while you removed to fill the tnk it will not seal properly and create a vacum leak causing the ecm to turn on the light.

or did you have an accident or did you run over any thing that could have damaged the vapor canister at the bottom of the vehicle and if this is the case you will see the light on because a damaged canister can cause a vacum leak

The light is on the bottom right side of the guages and it looks like half of a car with a gas cap coming out.

I have a 2002 Mercury Sable w/ 3.0L DOHC. The Fuel Cap light keeps on, yesterday the engine started idleing rough, today it acts like a stuck throttle until the car is stoped and then it acts like it...

You have a vacuum leak some where. Engine uses vacuum to burn gas vapors in gas tank. This is the EVAP SYSTEM. This system can detect a small leak or large leak. (gas cap light.) But there are also other items on the car that use vacuum to do work. The PCV circuit . This vents the engine's crank case. Also power brakes and some ac/heater controls. Now it sound like a good size vacuum leak if car idle is "high". I would say open the hood and listen. When car first starts idle should be around 1500 rpm or so. If you have a tachometer in car. then as it starts to warm up the idle should start to go down. Then listen for a hiss around the center of engine compartment. the black tube and ribs looking thing is your intake where vacuum ports would start. Check line or hoses to see if cracked or broken. Ford/Mercury like to use hard plastic for lines and become brittle after a while and break.

I have a 2000 mercury sable and the check engine light is on i put a scanner on it gave me code p0453 and thats an evaporative emissions system pressure/switch high input i have inspected the gas cap seems...

P0452 is a loose gas cap I think. Maybe your EVAP canister purge valve is stuck open causing a vacuum leak at idle/low speed. It should only open at cruising speeds.

I just changed the spark plugs and wires and it ran relatively ok but just yesterday it started to miss. Do I need to replace the distributor cap and timing?

I would remove the cap and look at the inside for any burn marks or cracks. I would check to make sure all the plug wires connectors are seated on the plugs. Has the fuel filter been replaced lately? I see alot of them over looked. The timing is controlled by the computer.

The 2003 Sable has the same headlight assembly and removal/replacement instructions as the 2001 Sable. Once I had this information in hand, bulb replacement was easy.
