Noisey rear gears...only after 258,000 miles

I love my 2000 GMC Sierra. The rear gears are "singing" and I hear it better to just change the whole rear axle assembly with a used one than to try to rebuild this one with 258,000 plus miles on it. I never tried it before. Is it easy enough? Any tips. I think it's a GU6 rear axle.

Hello wwlum, well in some ways the change out is easier especially if you are not familiar with this repair, have you checked anything to do with the differential, like check the oil, have you tried to see what kind of movement is at the pinion? I believe this is an integral type diff, have you removed the cover? hear is where you can see wear or pieces and can gauge gear slap you can buy a gear set if needed but car must be given to the installation as shimming may be required see what you think and let me know, see if we can figure this out for you, good luck

Hi, without driving it to experince the noise first hand i would tend to say its the rear diff. Other causes can be a broken engine or transmission mount. Good luck

My 1996 GMC Sierra with 330,000 miles on it is struggling going from 1 to 2nd gear. I am loosing fluid at the rear trnsmission seal. There is a slight whine. Do you think fixing the seal will eliminate the...

That's a lot of miles on that transmission! The short answer is "no". Replacing the seal will stop the fluid leak, which should be done. However, the whine is an internal mechanical problem, quite possibly from the rear output carrier which commonly needs replacement. "Struggling going from 1-2nd gear" is not very descriptive. If it's a "long" shift requiring higher speed and rpm than normal then you could be having governor pressure sensor or switch problems, valve body issues or internal hydrolic issues. This one is not likely to be a DIY project. Also, don't waste your money on a "pour-in" additive - it won't fix anything. Find a reputable transmission shop and be sure to ask what the "worse case scenario cost" will be because that's what it will likely cost you. (Speaking from experience in trans shop)
