Brake Lights Not Working ...

Hi,

I have a 1995 Chevy Monte Carlo, the brake lights are not working at all when pressing on the brakes.
I changed the bulbs and changed the brake switch. It still not working. Checked the fuse and it seems fine but did not change it to a new one.
Can you please advise on what I should do ...

Thank you,
Tony

    Hi Eddge,

Thanks for getting back to me. I'm going to go out and try you solution by changing the third brake light. If this still doesn't work, I will get back to you. Maybe find another solution ...

same problem here. When i press on the brake - the collision (middle) light comes ON, the tail lights / brake lights DO NOT. Both bulbs are brand new. tail lights / running lights come ON with the headlight switch as it should, turn signals work as well. all fuses that i can find are OK. i have tested the brake switch - it works fine. there are 6 wires going into the switch. the 2 that are in the molding together are for the collision light. the other 4 that are togheter - i have no idea. are these for the brake lights? is there a relay for these lights someplace? be dammned if i can find it.

replaced singal switch and still no brake lights what else could it be

  • Anonymous Apr 04, 2009

it is your turn signal switch i have a 96 monte carlo ls 3.1L V6 and it does the exact same thing. back up to a garage and look hold your brake down and wiggle your turn signal you need to replace the switch inside the column which comes with removing the steering wheel and air bag. the problem is that your either having bad contacts on your turn signal switch and or the plastic tabs have been ruined. also if your flasher button is gone it has a contact piece in there that helps hold the switch together. The 1995-1999 monte carlo is notorious for this.i know three people personally with the same issue or something like it. but i heard its just a process and not too terrible of a job. you can find a new turn signal switch on ebay for around 40 dollars.

Hello all; I figured out this one; it is indeed the turn signal switch. There are plastic tabs that hold the whole assembly together under constant friction when you use the turn signal. They eventually wear out. I was able to fix mine on my own. I had to take the air bag out and everything! The easy way to figure this out is to take out one of the brake lights from it's mount, lay it in the trunk connected and fold the seat down, so you can look back and see it go on as you pull the turn signal lever slightly towards so and step on the brake. That's how you know it's your turn signal control. you can either replace the control or fix it with washers and lithium grease like I did. It wasn't really hard. I used the Haynes manual and bought a stearing wheel puller. Still cheaper than the dealer or repair shop. I paid $60 overall.

I had to replace the turn signal switch on mine as well. Not cheap if you take it to a garage.

I had the same problem and I had to replace my turn signal switch. Have someone watch your lights as you press your brakes and wiggle your turn signal switch.

Check all the other lights as well. It could be another bulb out on the car. If the lights are wire in series a bad light on the front of the car can affect a light on the rear.

My 07 Monte carlo won't shift out of park

The first thing you need to do is check to see if the brake lights are working (lower lights not high mounted brake light), the park lock system gets power from the brake light circuit and will not release the shifter unless the brake pedal is pushed and the brake lights actually work.

I can't get my brake lights to work on my 1995 chevy monte carlo? any suggestions?

first check your fuse, usually if the brake light switch goes bad, the lights remain on, If all three of your brake lights are out, then it would generally be fuse related. On that year, I believe the fuse panel is located under the dash to the left of your steering wheel

1997 monte carlo. 3rd brake light works, but tail lamp brake lights do not.

The 3rd brake light working does reveal that the fuse is good, and the brake switch is good. Check the bulbs, sockets, and the wiring between the brake lights

No taillights, brake lights or turn signals

This is usually caused by a defective multifunction switch, see it quite allot, the clue is the 3rd brake light, it is on a separate fuse and does not run through the multifunction switch on the steering column.
